I get 12 weeks of job protection (unpaid) through federal FMLA.  As a resident/working in NJ, i understand that the state, through NJFLA, also provides me with an additional 12 weeks of job protection.  I thought this meant, 12+12=24 weeks of job protection, but apparently the 12 and 12 overlap for a 6 week period of time… meaning i have 18 weeks of total job protection.  This is what multiple people have told me but I cannot get a reasonable explanation for the life of me.  Also, the NJ state phone lines have had some kind of issue for the past few weeks and I have not been able to get through to anyone there.  Can anyone explain to me why these two 12 week periods need to overlap for 6 weeks, and why they are not two distinct 12 week periods of job protection?

Fellow NJ person here but I am not helpful because I do not get FMLA. I just wanted to make sure that you knew that you get the six or eight weeks of std then the additional 6 weeks off fli, all of which is paid by the state. Finally anything good about Jersey!

FLI doesn't give job protection so maybe that it why the overlap is required on second thought....

Also a NJ person, but I work in PA so I don't get this coverage. I don't know for sure, but I would guess the NJ coverage is supposed to protect more people who don't get FMLA, not extend the time. It sucks that you can't get more weeks off, but having any paid mat leave benefits is pretty good. I looked really hard for a position in NJ last time I switched jobs just so I'd be eligible for this, but no luck.
