DD has been in the tots class every winter since 5/6 months old and has had the same teacher. She's the aquatics manager there. I was hoping after the next session, ending may 20 that she'd be bumped for next fall but she gave her the go for next session that starts next weekend. It's the preschool two class and technically it's ages 3+. The prerequisites are comfortable going under water and floating and kicking comfortably with some assistance.
DD is really comfortable with the teacher and does a good job listening and has the current skills down good so the teacher said to give it a try. She's still the teacher for that one so she offered to be more hands on with DD if needed but thought she was ready. We live in a more rural area so the class sizes are about 4-6 kids. I'm really hoping she does good listening and not having me there. She tends to be the teachers helper/example student since she's on the older end and does good with that when not with me but I guess we'll see. I'll let you know how it goes!
When you are in the water with them do they wear a life jacket?
I feel like wearing a life jacket would be too much of a safety net. DD has the arm floaties attached to the chest float that she wears in the pool with us but she's fearless in it. I want her to know and understand the fear of water and how to save herself. Although our center does it in a very survival mode style for the younger classes, maybe it's different at other places.
