becole There was more too like she tried to put her arm back in and then her head was laying on top of the cord and cutting off all oxygen and blood flow. They looked at the heart monitors and they were going crazy because her little heart was just beating so fast with the distress. The Dr shoved her entire arm way past the elbow up me and was only 5 centimetres dilated and had to hold Peyton's head up off the cord. I was screaming like a maniac and couldn't stop. They started pushing the gurney towards the door and I was still hooked up to IV's and monitors and things plugged in. They ripped them out of the wall at the last second and ran with me down the hall with 4 nurses holding me down and the Dr with her arm up me straddling the gurney. She literally had to be in me holding Peyton's head right until they cut me open. One of the last things I remember seeing is her down there and they just grabbed the bucket of sterilizing fluid and just threw it all over my stomach and I saw it dripping down towards her and then I was out.
That's nuts. I was scared just when babes heart rate dropped and they came in and put an oxygen mask on me and then the doctor came in soon after asking if I could push at 9 cms... and then I also got the elbow up the vagina treatment to remove my blood clot post partum with no drugs or epi.

Yeah, I was ripped and so swollen for 2 weeks and couldn't figure out why everything hurt if I had a c-section.
Then I remembered the arm shoved in and was like...oh yeah.

I felt like I had been in a car wreck the second time. And I had stitches from a vaginal delivery and they still went in. And I remember a nurse saying "she needs morphine" and someone else saying "there's no time." I'm the literal worst in emergencies as I'm sure you all know. It's awful to feel so out of control.
Holy shit footloose that is a crazy story. You are pretty badass for getting through all that. I can't even imagine that level of pain you must have gone through.
footloose that is the most harrowing birth story ever.
Were you offered a de-brief or other form of counselling afterwards to help you understand and cope with what went on?
That is offered here for mum's who are traumatised by their labour, which I think is a great thing. You get to sit in a meeting with the consultant who reviews every decision made and they explain every step and answer any questions.
I also think it's a good thing because I'm sure most of us look back on our birth experiences with very little real recollection of what actually happened or why certain decisions were made because we are so out of it.
When DH and I talk about DD2's birth we have very different memories. I thought it was a great labour....the reality - I passed out twice (I have no memory of this) was hallucinating, DD was rushed to the resus room for about half an hour (I gave vague memory but not of the details or reasons why). I have minimal knowledge of what pain relief I had. And my labour was straight forward.
I can't imagine coping with what you went through footloose.

footloose I always thought my emergency c section was crazy and dramatic but I did not have a person's hand up inside of me and I did have an epidural and it still hurt insanely so I can't imagine....all my sorries

lulu I had to take it upon myself to report the arshole nurse in my situation and then a hospital official came to see me but they definitely weren't pro active about discussing it with me. That's excellent that they do that at your hospital.
Holy crap footloose I had no idea all that happened with Peyton's birth. Yikes yikes and more yikes. You are definitely a badass. Though in this particular instance you didn't have a choice in the matter. But there's been plenty of other evidence for bad-ass-ness otherwise so it still counts. But still, sorry you had to go through that!

What did the nurse do/fail to do?
The debrief/counseling thing sounds like a great idea but probably couldn't happen here or would be rendered useless because doc's I and nurses not allowed to speak freely because lawsuit potential.

Oh it's a long crazy story. Basically I was induced and laboring fine for like 10 hours with a good nurse checking on me. When they changed shifts the nurse didn't listen at all when I said something was different, something was hurting etc. She brushed me off for hours and just kept saying open the gates (down there). It finally progressed till I blacked out in pain. DH tells me I was screaming so loudly at that point another nurse just walking by heard my screams and came in. Within seconds I was rushed off to an emergency c and DH was basically shoved in a room knowing nothing (later I found out how scared he was). Anyway J had the umbilical cord wrapped around and was banging up against my side during contractions unable to get into the birth canal. All my fluid was mostly out so she was in distress. Lots could have been avoided if the nurse had taken me seriously and called the doctor in way before it progressed to that point.
