I've read conflicting information on when to start tummy time. When did you start tummy time with newborns?
We started once the umbilical stump came off. Tummy time was very short in the beginning, like only a minute before he would start crying. We also did a lot of tummy time on me, which was better tolerated and easier than formal tummy time.

We started when the umbilical cord came off and just did as much as she could tolerate (which was a couple mins at a time). When she got a little older, I flipped her on her tummy for a few mins at every diaper change. She hated tummy time until she could roll over on her belly herself!

We started at 3 months and he hated it! If he started crying I picked him up. Tummy time is not a developmental activity, its sole purpose is to give the back of the head a break to prevent flat head. I say this because my baby hates tummy time and still does and lifted his head on time, sat up early and is now crawling at 9 months. My point being don't get hung up on tummy time like me

We also picked her up when she cried. It wasn't worth making her cry over IMO.

I honestly don't remember when I started tummy time, but doing on on me definitely helped because dude hated it. Also as he got stronger doing it on a yoga ball was another good alternative.

We started right away, but only because we counted all the time on us on her belly. Our pediatrician said it counted and to not stress about it too much. Now at 3 months we still only do a few minutes a day on the mat. She hates tummy time, until you stick a pacifier in her mouth then she passes out on her belly.
Anyone have any tricks for getting an 11 month old to eat? She used to love food and her high chair, now it is all just the worst thing ever... MH is about to lose his mind since he is home the most with her.

My DD (also 11 months) is pretty much in the same boat, but I've talked to her doctor and she said it didn't really matter as long as she was still getting BM/formula and that she would eventually start eating solids again. A lot of our issue, we think, is separation anxiety. She'll eat more, but still not much, when H is right next to her. But when he isn't home she will barely eat anything.
All that to say, good luck. Hopefully it's a phase that passes soon.

Baby wearing counts towards tummy time, so technically we started day one. But I didn't lay her on the floor on her tummy until maybe 2-3 months, and only until she started crying.

I can commiserate. My 10mo hates his high chair too. He'd rather be moving, I think. Good luck.

+1. Mine hung out on his tummy on me a lot in the beginning but no formal tummy time until around 2ish months.

This reminds me, R also wouldn't eat lunch in her high chair, but if we ate off plates together on the kitchen floor she would usually at least take a few bites.
I've heard the term "birth plan" what does this entail? Do I need one? Some things I've thought about would be epidural or not, delayed cord clamping, cord blood banking, and I know this sounds crazy but making the placenta into pills afterwards. What kinds of things did you make known to your OB? obviously things rarely go according to plan but I'm still nervous of not having one.
yoshijo28 we had one and tried to keep it simple. I found a picture program and kept it less than a page because the nurses are busy and I didn't want to expect them to read a ton.
I think I put low intervention, all the vaccines, delayed cord clamping, skin to skin, and H tell me the sex.
They did the best they could, but my labor didn't allow for the low intervention birth we hoped for.
yoshijo28 , I don't think you really need a "plan" written out for your birth. For me, I had a whole bunch of things I thought I'd be doing to push through the pain as long as possible, but labor was nothing like I expected and I took all the pain meds I could and ended up laying down for much longer than I had planned.
I do, however, think it's great to come up with a few things you actually care about and make sure your SO is on the same page so they can make sure things happen the way you want. For me, those things were cord blood banking, delaying meds as long as possible (ha!), making sure that my DH soaked up the first few moments after our baby was born and then his job was to take photos and videos (which I am SO glad he did!) of her on my chest.
Edited to add - Most of the things I thought would be on my birth plan (skin to skin, delayed clamping, not washing her body right away, etc.) were already standard practice at my hospital and I found that out during our tour. Definitely take a tour so you can know what they're already planning on happening - you might be surprised!

I didn't do a formal plan. I just reviewed with DH what I was comfortable with and what I wasn't comfortable with. I went in to birth very laid back though because I learned here that things definitely don't always go as planned and I didn't want to be disappointed.
At my last appointment before delivery, my OB asked me about cord blood banking (which we did). I trusted her to guide me through the labor and delivery process. That was good enough for me!
If it makes you feel better to put it in writing, go for it! Give a copy to your dr, nurse, and hubby I would think.
ETA: I learned in my tour that the hospital did many of the things I wanted in my plan already. They did skin to skin, no visitors for 2 hours after birth, and had a form you filled out about what intervention levels you were comfortable with. That made me feel like I didn't need much of a plan.

I've elected to have a c-section because our baby is growth restricted and itty bitty. Our baby will likely end up in the NICU at least for a little while and I want to be able to go see her as soon as possible but was told I would need to recover for around 12-20 hours before being put in a wheelchair and sent to NICU. That seems like too long. How long where in you in recovery for? When were you able to get out of bed?

Immediately? My understanding is that anything where the baby is in a position to start supporting their own head is considered tummy time. So any time spent skin to skin on your or YH's chest could be considered tummy time. Molly's favorite position was being held chest to chest and looking around, but she did have pretty good neck control right away. Actual on the floor time we were pretty terrible about doing, but I would say around a couple of weeks old?

yoshijo28 My only birth "plan" was to get the drugs. All of them, as soon as possible. In reality, I had an extremely fast delivery and didn't get any. I'm going to pass on the sage advice that I didn't take and tell you to make sure you go to the birthing class. Even if you know that you want to be blissfully high out of your mind during the whole thing. Because, you know, sometimes you don't get the drugs and you have no idea what the hell you are doing and yelling at the nurses that you wanted drugs doesn't get you too far. At least that's what a friend told me.

I ended up with a csection and my little guy had to spend a couple nights in the special care unit for high WBC count. I think it was the next day before I was able to go see him. I don't think it was a full 24 hours, but definitely more than 12 hours. I was able to spend about an hour with him before they took him to the special care unit though.

My birth plan included: -Saving my placenta for pills (we had to bring a cooler to the hospital) - no eye ointment after birth - no bath while in the hospital - baby was never to be taken away from us so all check ups were done in my room - no pacifier - no hospital formula, we brought our own in case I had issues bf
Those were the big ones. I would recommend making a birth plan so the nurses are aware of your wishes.

I had a scheduled c section. If you have a choice I would get the spinal instead of the epidural because the drugs used in the spinal last 24 hours. Also keep up on your meds to keep on top of any pain. I recommend you talk to your ob about the kind of stitch he/ she uses. Ask for a double stitch. Also if you have the glue instead of staples or stitches you can shower right away. My ob did an exceptional job stitching me up so I had a great recovery. I sat up a few hours after surgery so I would have been comfortable in a wheel chair the same day as surgery. I was able to go to the bathroom alone the second day. Good luck!!

mrsrodgersaz, Thank you! I hope I will be able to spend a little time with her before they take her to NICU. (I mean I'm hoping she doesn't have to go at all but it's probable she will) That was my only hesitation for opting for the c-section but I want to do what was the least stress on the baby. They said my husband will be able to go right up with her though so at least she'll have one of her parents with her. Just stinks after all this time I'll have to wait again! lol
tikoberry99, Those are all good questions that I will ask! I didn't even think about how they will close the incision or about medication. Thank you!

tikoberry99 I knew we were similiar! Can't believe someone else did the placenta into pills. Was your OB cool with the idea? Tell me all the things about it
