notagoddess, what are you using so stuff your pockets? The microfiber inserts that they come with are crap. I use mine to wash my windows...
I received some used pocket diapers (Bumgenius) without the inserts, so I bought some. I got the Nora's Nursery bamboo ones off Amazon. I washed them 4 times prior to using as instructed.
The prefolds seem to be working better if I use the Thirsties size 1 cover I have. I can't get a tight fit on the one size covers even though she's around 13 pounds.
notagoddess I replied but I don't see it so sorry if this is a double post somewhere. Are your pockets OS? A lot of them say they fit starting at 12lbs but in my experience not well until closer to 15 unless your baby is a huge chunk. DS is almost 15 and just starting to fit in some of my OS on the tightest setting. DD1 fit at 12 but she was a major thunder thighs chunk of a baby. When you put the diaper on and tuck her feet to her chest like a cannon ball, are there gaps? If you pick her up like she was standing, does the front gap at her belly button? I'd check fit, stuffing material, and are they 2nd hand maybe they are repelling; in that order.
Yes the pockets are OS and they are hand me downs. I can get an OK but not super snug fit in them. Some of them have slight gaps. It's good to know the fit might improve as she gets bigger.

Thanks everyone! I'm sooooo relieved that it isn't early teething, I'm not ready for that yet!
@flyinghorses- yay for R sleeping well for DH, frustrating that it's not you that he sleeps well for but one less thing to worry about at work. Sorry you went back to shitshow on your unit.

The fit will definitely improve with growth. Any gaps will cause leaks, you might just have to set them aside until she grows a bit more so you don't get frustrated. Poo leak was my big clue to ask about fit because cloth holds crazy poo-splosions typically. Last night DD2 had such a bad poo I could see the front of her diaper sagging and I could see it holding back a liquid flood from hell. I literally took the diaper off in the tub because laying her down would have just poured the poo put the top of the diaper. It was unreal. Elastic holds in a LOT.
And for repelling an easy test is to take your inserts and put them under your faucet running on a very light drop, laying on a slight angle. If the water beads up and just rolls off, you have repelling and need to fix that. I had to do that after I left DD1 with DH for a weekend and he used a zinc cream without a fleece liner. If they had a good wash routine previously, that shouldn't be the issue.
notagoddess how are the elastics in the legs? I just replaced the elastics in some of my bumgenius covers and the difference was crazy.
They work but they are less elastic than the new Thirsties cover elastics. I wonder if that could be it or if it's just a different design. I don't sew so I think fixing them would be more expensive than getting new ones.

Thank you, I will try this! The inserts are new but I wonder if the diaper itself is too old.

ETA: this OS cover looks way too big, right?
Yes and you never want prefolds popping out the cover anywhere. They will cause wicking. Edit: actually it's hard to tell from the angle if it's actually too high but you have a wing drooping down that should be tucked up to keep the a good fit, and the prefold has to be tucked in everywhere.

What about the fit on the pocket diapers? It looks OK but I'm getting leaks.
My TMI of the day is also a question. Why do I smell just hours after showering? Seriously, I'm reliving my teen years. Fuck, hormones. There is not enough deodorant.
I feel (smell?) your pain! I stink minutes after getting out of the shower. I was like this after having C too. I don't remember when it went away. I'm starting to think it's hormones from BFing, meaning it's not going away anytime soon. Ugh.

That does look better but again, I'd have to see the leg gaps with her legs pushed up to her chest and belly gap with her standing. That can be a good sign. Like this...my Bella Luna Pockets are good. VS my alva in green which aren't there yet....

If you find that to be the problem. It's really very simple to fix. It does take some time. It's all hand sewing. You just need a seam ripper, elastic, small safety pin, and needle and thread.

This was so useful, thanks! It looks like both brands of pocket diapers I have fail the test.
How does the prefold and cover look to you? This is a OS prefold and a Thirsties Size 1 (6-18 pounds) cover. The legs look great to me but there is a gap around the stomach. It's caused by the thickness of the prefold stuffed into the waistband. Is it a problem? I haven't had any leaks from the stomach yet.

notagoddess yup, the pockets fail for now. The cover looks good (double gussets are the bomb), the top is likely an issue because the prefold is too big. You'd get a better fit with a smaller sized prefold. You could give it a try but you may still get a leak out the top if she has a really big pee, or you go too long without a change and she pees on a wet prefold and it has nowhere to go, or if she pees while on her tummy. Girls tend to pee more to the back so it may not be an issue unless she does a lot of tummy time.

I'm totally regretting trying cloth right now. It seems late in the game to buy newborn diapers but she won't grow into the OS until I'm back at work. I probably won't have a lot of patience to deal with the learning curve as I'm adjusting into the new schedule. I'm going to give these prefolds a try though and see what happens. Also it seems as though the second these get wet she cries. She never did that with disposable. I changed her a lot but that gave me some leeway as needed.
