A bit if an exciting weekend for us.
Friday, I had what I thought was early labor, but it petered out again as I got kiddo ready for school. Went to my 40 week checkup and I'm still 1cm, 70% effaced. We start scheduling induction dates and I head home, figuring it labor restarts I'll stay home, else I'll go to work at noon.
On my way home, get rear ended when I stop for a pedestrian in a cross walk. Low speed impact, but terrifying none the less. Midwife has me return to the hospital for 4 hours of fetal monitoring. Fortunately, everything looks good, but the adrenaline puts the kiboch on labor restarting.
Relaxed as much as possible over the weekend, went on a long walk Sunday afternoon, ate pineapple, and did other things to encourage labor to start again.
Monday 3am, contractions start again but once again peter out as I get kiddo ready for school and drop him off. I leave his overnight bag at school just in case though. Decide to go home and rest and go to work at noon if contractions don't restart by then. They restart at 10 and remain steady at 8 minute spacing. I call the center to update them and they suggest that I tell husband to come home.
Head to the center at 4 (contractions are at 5-1-1 now), and only at 2cm. So we go for a walk and grab dinner. Return at 7:30pm and discover no progress.. the center is not set up for patients in early labor, so we are advised to go home and return when labor becomes more intense .
We contemplate getting a near by hotel, but many have 2 night min stays and aren't walkable. Figuring we have to drive anyway, we drive home.
Get home at 9:30pm, and I took a hot shower until the hot water ran out. Contractions start to get way more intense and painful. At 11 pm, I decide that labor is painful enough and different enough that I want to go back to the center. We get moving and arrive at 11:45pm.
Cervical check has me at 6cm so I can now be admitted which has me very happy. Even better, they inform me the tub is filled and waiting. Head upstairs, pretty much stripping my clothing off on my way into the tub. The water feels warm and wonderful. The next few contractions feel less intense and the time in between is actually quite pleasant. Then they picked up in intensity, but I'm still happier in the water. They check again and I'm at 8cm, and since my water has not yet broken, they need to break it and check for meconium.
Unfortunately, there is some, which means I need to be transferred to the hospital across the street. I knew this was possible, but wasn't happy. I stood up and got out of the tub and immediately am overtaken by and intense contraction that has me bearing down. A second one follows close behind and I guess it's becoming clear that we aren't going to make it to the hospital. We manage to get me to the bed before the next contraction which turns out to be more of a push since now I'm being told he's crowning. I remember the ring of fire and yelling, "right, this is the part that hurts!" One more push and he's out, screaming his little lungs out.
Total time at the center, one hour. Time from water breaking to baby, about 5 minutes...
