So excited to get to write a birth story! Hard to believe it's my turn!! And this turned into a novel, I just couldn't help it!!
I was up almost every hour Sunday night going to the bathroom. But didn't feel anything else. I woke up Monday morning, took a shower, and sat with the kids while DH got ready for work. Right when he went to leave at 7:30, I got hit with a painful contradiction. Thought it was just cause I had to pee so I told him to go and I would be fine. That is where I was wrong. Once he left, contractions started every five minutes and were pretty uncomfortable. At that point it was just me and the two kids trying to feed them. At 8 I called DH to put him on alert that contractions had started and were actually painful and he might need to come home. Told him I was going to give things 30 minutes to make sure it was the real deal. Next call was to my sister to let her know to start looking for someone to take her classes so she could watch the kids.
Well 15 minutes later I call DH and my sister back to say ummm, come over now this is the real deal and these things HURT! They both get there in 10 minutes and DH and I finish packing up and I give my sister instructions for the kids. Getting ready took longer as I had to stop every 5 minutes through pretty painful contractions. Apparently I go from 0 to 11 when I go into labor as the same thing happened with my 2nd. By 10 we had everything together and headed to the hospital. It's a 25 minute ride and it was rough. Sitting through contractions was the worst for me and yes I did scream at the top of lungs for half the ride. Fun times.
Got to L&D and got checked. I was already at 7cm when I arrived. The nurse was sure I was going to have a baby before I could get an epidural. Uh no thank you!! Contractions were every 3 to 5 minutes at that point and extremely painful. The only way I could deal was to stand and push/lean on the bed. No I do not want to sit ladies! Thankfully I was able to get the epidural at around 11:30 and it was wonderful. In fact it worked a little too well and I started to get numb all over. My hands were half numb and pretty much all the way up to my neck. The nurse turned it down for me and sat the bed up and it got better. My progress slowed down at that point and it took me till about 1 pm to get to 8cm. With the epidural I didn't care but the nurse kept acting surprised that I was going so slowly. I was just hanging out in the bed half falling asleep so it really didn't bother me. The dr ordered a pitocin drip around 1 to help things along.
Around 3:30 the nurse checked and said I was almost there. She wanted to help me so she had me lay on my side with a peanut ball in between my legs. By that time the nurse had turned the epidural down a few notches so I could feel my upper body again. But my right leg was pretty much dead. Couldn't feel it or move it myself. The nurse or DH had to. That was such a weird feeling and made us laugh every time they wanted to try a different position.
A little after 4pm the nurse checked me and said I was at a 10 and she wanted to do some practice pushes. She thought it might take me awhile so she wanted to o some before she called for the dr. She had to tell me when I had a contraction because of the awesome epidural but I was able to feel just enough to help me push. I did so through about three contractions and baby girl really started moving down. On the 4th one I pushed and baby started crowning. The nurse was not expecting that and ever so calmly said "we're gonna stop pushing, let me get the dr here" pretty sure she was not calm on the inside. She kept her hand on the baby's head till the dr hot there and told me not to push. The dr walks in about 5 minutes later: "hey, let's see what is happening....oh there's the baby..." and starts throwing on her gear and getting ready while the nurse is still holding my baby in. I pushed through one contraction and baby girl was out! Only needed one stitch.
