How old will (or was) your LO be when you introduce them to solids? Will/did you do rice cereal, or straight to foods? What will be babies first foods?

DS1 had a little oatmeal cereal around 5.5 months but that didn't last long. We did baby led weaning with solids starting at 6 months because he was already trying to take our food. It worked really well for him. We never had a choking episode and it was cool watching him figure out how to eat correctly. Our parents would hold their breath and try not to act concerned when we'd feed him around them because they hadn't heard of it before but after they got used to it, my mom says she wishes she would've done that with my siblings and myself, too. I plan to do the same with W. I've started letting him "taste" things like a tiny cake crumb or dipping my pinkie in a little sauce. This is probably a good time to admit that we never altered spices with DS1's food unless what we were eating was spicy. I don't think I ever have him anything not seasoned
With DD we did a combo of blw and homemade purées (mostly for daycare). We started rice cereal mixed with bm a week or so before she was 6 months.
We'll probably do the same with B.
I'm looking forward to starting solids even though it means more work for me to prepare food for him. I actually just bought new silicone ice cube trays to make/freeze blocks of homemade purees.
Twins ellabee. We also did a combination of homemade purées and blw. I started with oatmeal cereal though. I set aside one afternoon and made avocado, mango, squash, sweet potato, spinach, etc cubes using ice cube trays. I had a ton left over because once he got into solid foods he wasn't overly keen on purees because he wanted to feed himself. But he okay being spoon fed his oatmeal so I would mix them in to it.
I liked Happy Baby for puffs because they had different veggie flavors like kale and spinach.

WIth DD1, we started oatmeal at 5.5 months. She hated it. Quickly moved on to a combo of BLW and pre-made purees. I think we started with all of the green stuff first. Avocado, green beans, peas, etc. We went through ALL of the veggies first, so as to not spoil her with the sweetness of fruit (I have no idea whether that did anything). I think we started giving her little tiny bites of meat around 8 months?
With baby A, we will skip oatmeal and go straight to BLW - starting again with avocado and peas (we'll probably press each pea at first). We'll start around 6 months. She still has a wobbly neck, and strong head control is a very important factor in a baby's readiness for solids.

Did not know this! It makes total sense but not something I ever thought about. I'm glad to see you all waited til closer to 6 months. I have some friends and family tell me since we're almost 4 months I can start. I just told them she's still growing well on breast milk and has zero interest in our food, so I don't want to start yet.
I'll have to do some reading up on BLW I guess. I have no idea what it entails but have heard it quite a bit.

+1 the ped gave me the go ahead to start at 5 I think. I tried, ds had zero interest. I waited till 6 and boom! Interested.

My SIL had a 10.5lb baby and I feel like everyone commenting on his size and how much he must eat led her to start solids at 4 months. Since B just hit 4 months I can tell that I'm going to start getting subtle pressure about it from her side of the fam, but I'm holding firm to as close to 6 months as I can.
Beyond the extra work of food prep and the laundry impact, there's all the science behind open/closed gut etc that I just don't want to ignore. I plan on doing a lot of smiling and nodding when the topic of solids comes up. I will start when we're ready damnit!

E started cereal at 4 months, and just began with purees, the pedi recommended we start with that first. E actually really liked gumming the banana versus having it pureed. We have tried applesauce, banana and sweet potato thus far. Avocado is next on the menu. I've been making my own purees though. It's pretty easy.
With dd we started a little late, almost 7 months. I didn't think she was ready until 6 months and then we were traveling to see family and I didn't want to have to deal with food on top of bottles on the road. We did start with cereal and purées but I'm not against blw, I just didn't have a game plan. I'm really not sure when I'm going to start with R, or what I'm going to do. I should get on that since he is 4 1/2 months.

I wasn't even thinking about the fact that I won't be around to feed him during the day. Hm. I'll have to see what his care provider is willing to do or if I'll need to make purees, too.
So when we say "combo of BLW", we really just mean giving them some finger foods that include whatever the adults are eating, right? Or am I missing some other component? I did all the research for DS and decided strict BLW wasn't for us (or daycare) so I'm just wondering if I'm mid-remembering. pibblemom the AAP has changed their guidelines in the last few years so people are giving you outdated advice there. They currently recommend starting around 6 months.
That's what we did. DS1 got finger foods of whatever we were eating. I'd make him something else if what we were having wasn't BLW friendly or if it was spicy. He got chicken and steak a lot Lol

With DD1 I did pureed veggies like sweet potatoes and avocado just after 6 months and I'll so the same with the baby when she can sit up. I bought oatmeal cereal but didn't even end up giving it to her much. I don't remember when we started finger foods/BLW maybe 9-10 months.

By combo, I mean some finger foods, and purees when we need the ease/convenience.

We were given the go-ahead at our 4 month appointment and I have added in some purees but plan to do more once we've moved and are settled. Right now we don't have a high chair so I've been feeding her in the Bumbo, which depending on the day is either great and she's holding herself up fine or we struggle and don't eat much with the lack of upper back support. We have been doing oatmeal as well, typically in addition to our first and last bottles of the days since she does such long stretches as night and I want to make sure she isn't starving.
