My brother and his wife to be are having a baby next month...their first. They are a lot younger than me and this is their first home together.
Anyway, they live in Connecticut and obviously we won't be able to be there for the birth - or visit for a while.
My parents will be there around the birth and I could send a gift over with them, but have already asked them to take over DD2s newborn clothes for them, so don't want to eat further into their baggage allowance.
Her mum invited me to the baby shower - obviously out of politeness, knowing I couldn't go. But that was sweet of her.
But on the invite were details for registries.
Showers are becoming a thing now in the U.K., but less so registries. People do have wedding lists but over the years they've become less popular.
So I need help.
I want to get them something from the registry - especially as it means I won't have to ship anything.
Her lists are with Babies r Us and Buy Buy Baby.
We have Babies r Us, but not Buy Buy Baby.
Is one better than the other - basically, which one should I opt for?
Any tips on which gifts are better to pick - their lists seem sensible to me, nothing OTT.
Honestly BRU and BBB are pretty comparable. I'd just pick what you want from either one. There's usually coupons available for BBB, 20% off a single regular priced item.

They're pretty much the same. Neither one is better than the other, IMO. The only thing that might sway me was whether they live significantly closer to one over the other in case they need to return or exchange something.

I preferred bbb, but they are similar. I think bbb is a little nicer in the store, but they sell the same stuff. I buy based on my favorite items on the registry.
I agree, BRU and BBB are pretty comparable in terms of selection. They have both in CT so it'd be easy to return to either one depending on where they live. BBB tends to be more expensive but they have better coupons
And if you ever come to CT, you need to let me know!
Thanks also for the tip about the money off vouchers.
Another question:
What happens with actually getting the stuff? Does it get delivered in dribs and drabs as people order or all at once on a certain date? Does the list have a closing date?
Or - does the person have to go to the store to collect everything?
Also - does it state who the gift is from? So, would my brother and SIL see who has bought what?

The store ships items to the registered address for each purchase. So drips and drabs. And the lists stay up for a long time (mine from DD2 is still up and she's a year old). You can usually add a note to tell them who it's from. Some registries will tell you who it's from without it, and some don't

We are desperate to visit but there's no way we could afford flights for all five of us.
So instead, I'm planning to visit with just DH for my 40th in 2 years time.
The plan would be fly to NY, stay with them for 7 days and squeeze in 3 days down in New Orleans before flying home.
It would be awesome if during those 7 days, we could meet up. I would love it!!

How exciting that the gifts just keep on getting delivered.
It would be like everyday there are new parcels to open in the run up to having a baby.
I also think I love the idea now of a registry.
It would save you having to trail around shops while heavily pregnant, or buying shit online because you've got sidetracked due to hormones 😀.

Maybe we should plan a M14 GTG for 2 years from now in New Orleans.
Also, lulu, I'm not sure where in CT you'd be going but Aer Lingus is now offering direct flights from the UK to Hartford, CT. I'm not sure which UK cities though.

I know!!!! And it's not much more expensive and from Scottish airports. It's brilliant.

They stay in Orange. Is that anywhere near you?
Yes!! It's maybe 15 minutes from me and I pass it everyday on my way to work! Small world!
Back to your original question, both BBB and BRU are in the next town over from them so returns to either would be pretty easy.
