Do you turn on your outside lights every night? Do you turn them off when you go to bed?
The short story: Our neighbor cornered H at a neighborhood gathering and asked him a lot of questions about why we leave our front light on at night. This neighbor is an odd bird to begin with, so maybe it's nothing, but H got the impression she was offended by our light as if we were implying it's not a safe neighborhood.
The details: Our street is very dark. It's the end if a cul-de-sac with no street lights and apparently nobody else ever turns on their outside lights. The light in question is not on the porch, it's like a decorative lamp-post in the front yard. It's on a sensor, so it is on whenever it's dark out. That was my FIL's idea. The light on the actual porch I usually only turn on if we are expecting guests.

Lots of people in our neighborhood leave their lights on all night. Most turn them off they go to bed but it isn't unusual for someone to leave a light on. Ours is frequently on all night because DH doesn't get home from work until 2 or 3 in the morning and he always forgets to turn it off.
This is ridiculous. It's laughable that the neighbor is concerned. Now if the light was shining right in their bedroom window at night, then maybe that would be worth mentioning. But that's not the case so I'd ignore.
This neighbor is very strange to begin with. She may have juat been talking about it because she likes the sound of her own voice and DH read into it. I don't think she ever really said it bothered her. But apparently the people who used to live here did not turn that light on. And we do. Did I mention she's strange? LOL

Is this the lady who came to your party??
No. It's the lady right next door. She talks A LOT.
I would respond, "Why do you ask?" Maybe it is bothering her somehow, or maybe she is just curious.
We only turn the porch light on if we are expecting someone at or after dusk. We have a garage so DH pulls into it when he gets home. We rarely use the front door in general. We do not leave it on all night. However we do have some outside lights that stay on all the time on the corners one the house.

This woman is hard to describe. She talks so much you just can't even get a word in. And I can't even follow what she's saying because I'm thinking "holy shit she's talking a lot" and she changes topics a lot, and talks about her family members referring to them by their first names like I know them. It's comical, really. So I can't fault H for walking away from the conversation not really understanding what she was getting at.
I'm confused as to why she would care. We don't leave ours on, but I have a very bad habit of leaving lights in the house on so my house is normally lit up like Christmas anyway. I wouldn't think anything of it if I had a neighbor that did that.

ours is on a timer that we don't know how to change, so it actually automatically goes off, but I wish it stayed on. we live in a fairly safe neighborhood but car break ins and stuff like that are common and I'd rather have our garage and porch light on all evening for safety.
Ours is on a timer as well. It goes on at 5pm and goes off at like 3am. There were a few car break-ins in the neighborhood last summer so I figure it doesn't hurt.
