Some background- my son is 7 and was diagnosed with autism (level 2) at 3y8m. He received EI services (speech, OT, PT, SEIT) for developmental delay from 14 months on. He attended a special needs preschool for 2yrs. He was in an 8:1:1 Autism class for K and 1st grade and this year was in a 12:1:1 (at a different school than K and 1st). His autism diagnosis was recently confirmed again (in January) but the DP noted that his learning patterns are different than most kids with autism as his auditory processing was much stronger than his visual processing.
Fast forward through an absolutely awful school year at this new school in which he essentially made zero progress on any of his IEP goals (for which most were carry overs from last year). After countless meetings and ridiculousness with the school he had a new full eval done at the school this week (still waiting on the formal write up). The school psych called and said she strongly believes he has dyslexia. She said he is clearly a bright student who has been underestimated over and over. She said she believes he needs more intense reading support (which I repeatedly requested and was denied this year). She said his reading is severely delayed (K level) but his math is in the low average range. She is waiting on the speech evals to see if there is a language delay (which she doubts- she is pretty confident it's just his artic that is an issue). If there is no language delay than she has no doubts he needs a dyslexia diagnosis and an overhaul of his current reading program (again- exactly what I've said all year long). She doesn't believe the 12:1:1 is appropriate as she feels they truly have no expectations for him (btw he is a good student who is respectful and listens and follows directions) and she would prefer he had greater access to gen ed curriculum (which I agree as the lessons I've seen this year in his special ed class are so poor- especially compared the the gen ed 2nd grade work- he can understand the oral content of the gen ed class but cannot do any of the reading or writing). She would like to see him in an ICT classroom.
So he has one last CSE (number 4 for the year) on monday. I need to prepare. We can't let another year slip by like this one. I know he is capable of more and needs more intensive reading support. Thai is the first time I've heard anyone consider dyslexia and my knowledge is pretty limited. I also know it's rare for a kids to be diagnosed with both. And I have no idea what approach I should take on Monday or what a good/solid program for him would look like. Thankfully regardless of where he ends up he will be at a different school as his current one ends at 2nd grade. I really want him back at our neighborhood school- but the school psych didn't seem sure that would be the best fit for his reading needs....
Any thoughts on what I should be requesting on Monday or researching this weekend?? Thank you!
