If I was transitioning dd now I think I'd go straight to twin bed with rails rather than adding multiple transitions in the future. We have a permanent gait at the top of our stairs which alleviates the fear of falling down the steps, and still give dd the freedom to walk to our room or the bathroom.
Hopefully he'll love his new bed and will enjoy the transition.
Re Ikea, we'd never be able to get it home from the store and shipping will cost just as much as the bed. Amazon has a cheap toddler bed for $50 with free Prime shipping so I'm leaning towards that, but I'm going to do some more research on the cost of twin beds before deciding.
I just checked Ikea and to ship a $169 bedframe will cost $119! We can't fit the boxes in our car so I guess that's a no!
comicSans, I'm going to look at getting just the mattress with the metal frame for now and we can always upgrade to something fancy later. I'd love something with drawers underneath since we are short on space but I haven't found one for under $300 (doesn't include the mattress).

We got ours from wayfajr. No headboard and similar to meggypoo1. I can find the link if interested. It was like $150?

I found a really simple bedframe and mattress at Macys for $220 combined with delivery. I feel like that's as good as it's going to get if I want to go to a twin.

Oh no. Just the frame. We got a cheapie mattress through a mattress store, clearance for like $130 or something.
I would buy the mattress and box springs right now. WOrst case, just put it in there on the floor. A bed frame won't make that big of a difference for transitioning. You can find cheap frames at mattress stores too. I wouldn't get anything extravagant just a plain metal frame.
meggypoo1, we don't really have a number in mind. I don't expect this to be the "forever" bed because we'll likely be moving in the next year and can get something nicer as part of a bedroom set when we buy our "forever" house. So I just want to spend as little as possible. Macy's has really good deals as part of an early 4th of July sale so I've been looking there and we're looking at around $250 as the lowest I can get it with shipping. It's still more than I was expecting. Maybe we just put the mattress on the floor for now...

I should also mention that we didn't just get the cheapest mattress. We got one on clearance and our friend manages the mattress store so we got more of a discount. I thought I put that in an earlier post, but I didn't. Sorreh.
We moved D1 to a small toddler bed (it was given to us) when she was 19 months because we needed the crib for DD2. We still have handle locks on the door and she hasn't bothered to get them off to come out.

One thing to consider if you end up with frame + boxspring + mattress it's gonna sit very high off the ground. We had originally bought a twin platform bed with mattress for DD1, but even without a box spring it ended up being way too high for her (and too scary for me) It's still in her room as a guest bed but we got her a toddler bed instead.
If you're planning on buying a twin anyways in a year when you move I would just do a twin mattress on the floor for now. Assuming you can't just take the side off your crib, otherwise that's my top choice.
