How can I change my roof to slate?!

Hey. Yesterday I went to one of my friends Amy's housewarming.
Believe me, her new house is full of vintage! The walls are fake like rock walls. And the roofing is of slates! I loved the look. The front roof of my home is of clay I would like to try multi-coloured slates instead! I'm not sure it is possible or worth trying. I've talked with the slate roof contractors who have sourced the slates. We've discussed the possibility of replacing the roofing with slates, my requirements and then the corresponding expense(approximate). They said, it is possible but in order lay slates over the roof, walls should be more powerful compared to other roofing! After hearing that I got confused. So I'm here to know more about this, especially from people who have tried changing the roofs after years of home construction.I'd be grateful to your thoughts-If any.
