It is French from the Brittany region, meaning "princess". My family has a bit of French heritage, though mostly Irish so another thought we had was Maeve. Which do you like better?

Um, what is your source on Maelie being legit? Because, no... Maëlle is legit, and Breton. As is Maëlys, as @blackpearl08 said.
I would go with Maëlle or Maëlys. If it's absolutely between Maelie or Maeve, go with Maeve. Maelie is incredibly juvenile sounding, and not even a legitimate name.

Saw it several places (PBK is even selling a "Princess Maelie" doll) but originated from here: nameberry.com/babyname/Maelie
I like Maelle and Maelys (and could pronounce them properly myself as I speak French) but suspect they would trip up a lot of people.
Helpful to see all the votes and feedback, ladies!
I love Maëlle and Maëlys much more than either Maeve or Maelie (and, btw, have you seen some of the names that are featured in the PBK catalogue? Some are lovely, but many of them are terrible!).

That definitely does not make it legit. Both PBK and Nameberry list/endorse some horrendous made up names.

I mean I could put up all the links/evidence I've found that it's legit, but it's after midnight and that would probably be boring for everyone, no? Trust me, I am not a fan of made up or "youneek" names.

Then don't use Maelie. Most name sites out there spout misinformation. Behind the Name is a good, reliable source. It only has Maelie listed as user submitted, which lends nothing to its legitimacy as a name.

Given that I can't find a single legitimate entry for Maelie in 3 pages of Google, BUT can find at least four in the same for Maelys... I'd go with either Maelys/Maelle. But if it's Maelie or Maeve? Maeve in a heartbeat.
As PPs said, Maëlle and Maëlys are legitimate names. Maelie is part of a trend of -lie names that are very popular in Quebec right now. In other words, it's a new-ish name that will probably be time stamped. My vote is for Maeve or Maëlys.

You speak French, understand French, but still want to butcher the name? ::does not compute::
EDIT: Oh, and dying over "Pottery Barn Kids" being an authority on names. Oh my.

No. I would default to the proper spelling/punctuation. However, given the two alternate spellings, it would probably prove difficult for people to pronounce/spell here and it is probably not a good choice.
As someone whose name has been butchered my entire life, I don't desire to butcher any names.
Also, are you an authority on Québécois/French names and which sites they use to determine legitimacy? Because I can read and understand French, I have been researching the name "Maelie" through French-language sites and it doesn't appear to be so made up. Time-stamped is more likely.

Helpful to know- I got the impression it may have been popular in Quebec based on a few Canadian links I saw. Just did a google.ca search and found a few sites, but I don't know much about who the authorities are when it comes to names in French-speaking regions of Canada. Merci pour votre réponse.

I'm from Quebec and am fluent in french, but I side eyed Maelie. It doesnt seem legit, and it seems like a variation on Emilie. I'm pronouncing it in my head and I dont think its very pretty in french at all. Its just a little weird, but then again, we have some strange names here.
