Need your help, re: falling and rising hcg levels after IVF

Hi Ladies,
Sorry for the urgent post. I am not a newbie to this board, as I have been on and off for the past 2 years with my 4 previous losses. I hope you will help me with my question.
I had my first beta on Friday at 12dpo and it was 40.
My second beta on Monday at 15dpo was 34 and I was told to prepare for another miscarriage.
My third beta this morning at 17dpo was 50.
I didn't have my phone with me, so the doctor left a message and said that it is either ectopic or is an "abnormal pregnancy". Can someone give me the medical term that it could possibly be? I swear, I can't catch a break.
