So as I was changing DS2's diaper today I noticed he has a small dimple right above his butt crack. The hospital pedi didnt mention anything upon examining him and discharging us and our pedi didn't mention anything about it this morning at our appt. But of course dr. Google says although most of the time its nothing, it could also be a possible sign of something serious.
Anyone's kid have this? I'd think the pedi would've mentioned it to us if it were something worth investigating right? Either way, I have to bring DS1 in for his 2 year appt tomorrow so I'll ask about it then as well.
Sammie has one. Pedi mentioned it at discharge at birth just make sure we knew to clean it well. Idoesn't bother her, but it can keep soap and dry out which gets irritated. I have one too and it can sting if irritated, I try to keep that in mind if she is digging back there.
Our pedi looked at dd at her 6 month and wasn't concerned but is going to watch because she has a little patch of hair there. I'd mention it tomorrow they will probably keep watch on it

I think they would have said something in the hospital if it was deep enough to warrant concern. They noted DS's right when he was born and checked over/cleaned in the OR. They told us to schedule an ultrasound after we were discharged but then we were there longer, so I asked and had it done before we left. It's superficial.
Yeah I havent really been able to get a great look at it yet bc he's been fighting diaper changes and his circumcision is still so fresh so i try to keep diaper changes short and sweet, but I just happened to notice the little dimple right above the top of hhis butt crack.
I should've stayed off dr google and just asked you ladies instead. And I figured if it was something concerning the pedi would've mentioned it.

When it's associated with SB, there are other signs. It is one of the things the doc is looking for with the newborn exam. I'd be shocked if it was missed.
My youngest had a sacral dimple. I just made sure to clean it well. I think he grew into it because you cannot even notice it anymore now that he is 13 months.
My DD had one and now at almost 8 months its basically gone. They did not mention it at the hospital but did at her 1 month. Basically said no big deal as long as it goes away eventually and there were no other issues.

DD is 12.5 months old and has one. No one has ever mentioned it so I haven't even thought twice about it. Maybe I should have the pedi check it out at her next visit....
DS1 had one and it was pretty deep and hairy. It looked like he had two anuses at first glance. The midwife mentioned it to us and that was about it. It's still there at 3.5 but very shallow.
My DD has one. At about 3 months or so our pedi sent us for an ultrasound on her lower spine. Results were normal. No further concerns after that. (She's almost 6 now)

Yep just like everyone else said, as long as it's closed its all good. Normally the check it just to ensure its closed. My husband has one too (I was the first person to tell him it was even there lol)
Wow..so I guess its more common than I thought. I double checked it and it looks like a deep dimple but its closed, so thats good. Ill just follow up with the pedi tomorrow but I'm sure they would've mentioned it if they were concerned.
I know Larry happened. Please do not try to convince me otherwise. Please don't talk to me about coffee. I don't drink it. I don't caffeine. When I state my opinion, that is me chiming in on a topic. This is not me saying you suck at life if you do or feel differently. If I want to say that, I will. If I want to speak on you, I will.
Ds2 has one and the pedi never mentioned anything about it except that he had one. I didn't even know there could be anything potentially concerning about it until I looked it up just now.
The little boy I nanny has one. He's 9 months. I started watching him at 4 months and they never said anything. His is pretty shallow, but I have to make sure I clean it when he poops. I didn't think it was that abnormal but his isn't that defined, just a little dimple (but is noticeable).
Both of my kids have one. DD's is deeper than DS's. She had an unltrasound done after her 1 month appt (mostly out of caution because there were no other signs of something being wrong). She's fine. At 3 years, it's still pretty noticeable though. She hasn't grown out of it.
@ladyt DS was born with one, and he still has it at 16 months. I'm kind of surprised they didn't make note of it at the hospital or check it out? I'm guessing they saw it but weren't concerned about it being an issue.
DS had an ultrasound done for his, basically to rule out spina bifida or any other genetic disorders. I think the main reason he had the u/s done though was because in addition to being born with the sacral dimple, he was born with bilateral congenital cataracts...sometimes the two can be linked to a genetic medical condition.
I would just bring it up with your pedi at the next appointment and see was he/she says.
When it's associated with SB, there are other signs. It is one of the things the doc is looking for with the newborn exam. I'd be shocked if it was missed.
I didn't read the responses before I posted, but yeah. My DS showed other signs of SB, so that's why they did the ultrasound in the hospital. It ended up being fine.
*Lurker* My neice has this dimple, and they just figured out at 9 years old that she has a mild form of SB. She had other issues (only one kidney, one ovary, and issues with bladder control). However, they didn't check until she was older and still having bladder issues. Apparently they can be connected. It appears from this thread, however, that the majority of the times it is normal. I don't want to worry you but I would push for testing if there are other issues later.
DS has a fairly large one and a giant (and I do mean giant) birthmark overtop of it. The pediatric dermatologist referred us for an ultrasound to check for structural abnormalities. Everything checked out just fine.
