We are hunters and during hunting season there are probably anywhere from 5 to 15 guns in our old house on a given weekend. We were my brothers hunting camp. Mostly rifles and shotguns, but one or 2 hand guns. The rest of the year we have 2 shotguns and I am looking into getting a pistol for me.
My dad always said this about the protection aspect. If someone is coming into the house, grab your gun and shoot through the upper part of the door/window. 99% of the time the perp will run away. Better to buy a New door or window than to try to hit a moving target.
To the original question: we live in an area where most people have multiple guns. I will and do ask how they are secured. I would not be offended if someone asked me or wasn't comfortable.
What if some poor person is out for a walk near your house?? I don't like the idea of shooting off random bullets, especially ones that you intend to go outside when you don't know what's there.

I always heard don't shoot what you can't see.
Also, know your target and what is beyond it.
Maybe Joe Biden is her dad?
At any rate, my child's bed is directly above our door on the upper floor so I will pass on this shitastic advice.
There are people who buy guns and ammo because they think the government is going to try to take it from them. I think that's crazy.
We do own a hand gun for self defense. My husband works night shift at times and I'm home alone with DD. If someone were to attempt breaking into my house I have no doubt that I could protect us with that handgun. I also would not be afraid to do so in that situation to protect my family. If that makes me an idiot then so be it.
But can't you just get an alarm system? Why a gun? An alarm system can't accidentally kill a loved one.

This fucking terrifies me.

Unless its your kid unexpectedly coming home for the weekend from college on a Friday night to do some laundry. Oops.

Tell him thanks for being a fucking jackass that makes all gun owners look like idiots.
I lived in the middle of no where on a 200 acre tree farm. Closest neighbor more than 400 yards away through dense woods. But even so, I was talking about shooting through my bedroom door only after my children are locked in behind me and after a verbal warning or through a window where you can see the person trying to pry it up. In reality I wouldn't have time to get to my gun, load it, and secure my children before the person was inside. Much faster to grab the baseball bat I keep by my head board. Sorry. Posting after a bottle of wine at 12 am ish makes for some incomplete thoughts.
And my guns are locked up in gun safes and the same with my brothers when they visited. I actually threw one of their friends out because he left his unloaded gun by his bed while getting a shower. And that was when there were no kids.
I would absolutely never shoot blindly through a door or window. That is how people shoot their family members.
There is no guarantee that an alarm would stop someone from entering my house. I need to know that I can protect my daughter. It's that simple. We do not pull a gun at every little noise. But it is there for protection should we need it.

Because when someone still gets in and the cops aren't there yet I will be damned if you are laying a hand on any one in my family. That's why. We have an alarm system too just FYI.

I grew up on a farm too. Never in a million years would this have been advocated because my step dad taught proper gun safety.
Your explanation doesn't help. It's still a shitty suggestion. If you are going to pull out a gun on an intruder, you better be ready to shoot that person, not just shoot near them and hope they run away.

I think it's just a bad idea all around. So this intruder is just standing around inside your home while the alarm goes off waiting for the cops to arrive, instead of fleeing? That seems pretty far fetched. But ok. What if he has a gun too? Now you're in a shootout with your kids in the house. The benefit of having a gun as your go to for self defense are just so outweighed by the risks of having a loaded gun in your home.

Farm girl here, also.
Nope. Still dumb.
Also, 400 yards isn't that far in regards to bullets.

Strongly disagree. If the intruder came for my tv he would probably flee. If he came with mental health issues to hurt someone. Who knows. It's not far fetched. It happens. It just won't happen to me. If he has a gun too it's all the more reason to be prepared. The benefit for YOU having a gun is outweighed by the risks. The benefit for ME, trained, and confident , is not at all. Again, I say all this sincerely respecting your decision to not own a gun. Please respect mine to own one.
Know your target and what is beyond.. One of the 5 Safety rules... ((This is in response to the shoot above the door))
Finger off the trigger action open safety on muzzle control
The Golden Rule: Treat every gun as if it were loaded
We say these exact things in our Firearm safety class. several times each day.
Once you pull that trigger, you can NEVER take it back.
400 yards is NOTHING for a projectile from a firearm.
Ok. I'll stop.
EDIT because today I can't type!
I'd like to point out every poster who has mentioned their safety training seems to grasp how important it is to be safe. You can definitely tell those who don't have any training beyond someone taking them to the range.
Well its common knowledge were gun enthusiasts, but we have no problems informing others there are guns and dont mind them asking. They are locked up and out of children's reach. We take all the precautions neccisarily and have even placed a second lock on both gun cabinets.
I can't remember if I posted about this on Parenting (TB) or on FB. So this may be a repeat.
Think of it as a sliding scale. On one end is safety and on the other is readiness. The more you slide to one, the less you are of the other. The choice is yours as to where you want to be on that scale but it is important to recognize the polarities.
I do not care where you land on that scale as long as it is done responsibly and with full knowledge of safety.
I implore you, if you haven't already, please take a class. There are beginners classes and there are classes for those who already know how to shoot. But please don't rely on "well, this is how my daddy taught me..." because that's how accidents happen.
