DO NOT BURN!! It can get into your lungs that way and do a lot of damage. You have to be super careful of you rip it up. It's hard to get all the roots and they actually have more oil than the plant. I've seen a Roundup product that is specifically for things like poison ivy. Even so I think it can take up to a month to kill it off. Honestly I'd probably ask someone in your local nursery how to best deal with it. I got poison ivy when I was around three living in New Jersey. It was terrible. We had vines growing up the trees in the backyard and I had nightmares for years after we moved. We have poison oak out here but that's nowhere near as nasty. Good luck!
Lurker here but just wanted to say that I hate poison ivy and it is so horrible. We bought a house last year in the middle of winter and by mid June had discovered that there was poison ivy all around our house. Some had grown up a tree so badly that it had more leaves than the tree itself. Apparently the previous owner decided to just ignore and avoid for about 10 years. Luckily I don't react to PI but DH does so I got to do all the hard work. A few things I learned:
Only the roundup brand spray works If you touch any part of the plant, especially the roots or older plants, you can then transfer the oils (DH got it after I touched a door knob) Spray off all garden tools with bleach when done. Bleach kills the oils because bleach works by breaking down the molecular structure of oils, making it inactive. Shower and wash all clothes in cold water. Try not to scrub it off with soap either. Apparently hot water and soap just spread it around your skin more. Use thick disposable gloves if/when you rip it out. Never ever burn it. The oil gets into the air and your lungs.
My neighbor also told me that, like all ivy, the roots survive very well. So I am going to have to repeat it all over again for at least the next few years and cross my fingers that DD quickly learns never to touch it.
I would also add that you should pick up some Tecnu before starting the process. You should definitely cover up but if you are sweating as you pull it out, or your clothes are thin, the oil can soak through your clothes. The Tecnu bottle will have instructions on how to wash your clothes in it, and how to wash your skin with it. You can also apply it to your skin before starting to work in the posion ivy, and it will help act as a barrier to the oils - but still wash with it afterwards too. GL!
I am very sensitive to poison ivy. We had it in our previous backyard. The same patch of it grew in our yard & our neighbor's yard. DH sprayed it in both yards with the PI Roundup. He later dug it up, including as many roots as possible. He would wash his clothes & shower right upon entering the house. He also had a special pair of work gloves that he only wore for poisong ivy work.
If you have pets, I wouldn't let them out in a yard with PI. I think I got infected once from one of my dogs.
