Insurance is "up to x dollars". Not guaranteed. IL's had like $700K for building and replacement. We did NOT get that. And we had to literally fight over how much a laptop was worth if it was 3 years old.
And Red Cross gave them a $500 Giftcard. I would donate to someone in a fire 100% of the time.
I guess after the experience I had, I'm not comfortable giving money. Clothes and things of that nature? Yes. This is obviously a situation where past experiences color how you would behave in certain situations. I, for example, would donate to lung cancer research. Very, very few people will do that, because lung cancer is "100% avoidable," and "only smokers get it." At least, that's what people believe. But, it's my thing.
We should do a post where we say what is one fundraiser you would NOT participate in. It would be like an FFFC of fundraising. We would all have shame.
We should! Hmm.... I would not participate in.... Well, I threw a fit when my daycare wanted me to have my 18 month old sell wrapping paper to raise money for their new rug. I pay tuition. Use my tuition. And budget better if you need a rug.
The only experience I have with it is the one I mentioned, which is the fact that they had a $10K check in their hands THAT NIGHT. They didn't need money. And I know if my house goes up, I get way over the value to rebuild it and replace things inside. I mean, surely not everything, and I don't know the ins and outs, but I know it pays over the value to rebuild for sure. And I believe it pays for a place for us to live in the meantime.
I honestly think people don't understand that you can negotiate with hospitals. You can literally pay one penny a month. As long as you are making payments, they really can't do a ton. They can threaten to, but from my experience, they can't and won't.
MOST full replacement cost policies pay for the cost to rebuild and that's the materials, knock down what's left, haul that away, put you up while its being fixed... all of that. A lot of times there 20% built in case their valuation is off. I know several companies that will come out to you, write you a check for your limits, and send you on your way there's none of that bullshit. This is why I'm always telling people that bitch about cost that it's not about the cheapest crap you can find.
I don't know a TON about our policy, and I'm glad I don't, and I hope never to have to know it. But I was comforted by the fact that a coworker that DID lose everything in a fire was very happy with how everything worked out in the end--she had the same insurance.

Wow! That's terrible....
To be fair, I bet my in-laws didn't pay a lot for their policy.

Re: GFM pages. I don't understand them. Why should I pay for you? You chose not to have medical insurance, and if you can't afford it, hospitals work with you.
That's gonna get me flames. But I've had huge bills before and I couldn't afford them. I called the hospital, and they worked out a payment plan for me. The girl who sits next to me at work (making the same amount of money) had a $1500 bill. She called the hospital and said she doesn't make enough to pay it. They WROTE IT OFF. That's buillshit. I don't know her situation, maybe she has other bills and stuff, but I DO know she's looking to buy a house. If she can't afford $1500, she can't afford a house.
Also, I don't understand GFM for house fires either. That's again, what insurance is for. I have a friend who asked for money, but I know the red cross handed her sister a $10K check that very night. They didn't need help. They received it. I understand giving clothes, etc, I guess. But. Again. Insurance?
There's clearly something I don't get. But, then again, I don't ask for help with anything.
Haven't caught up yet so this may have been said already. But, what about large deductibles? I mean, I know you pick your deductible when you sign up, but you never know when a disaster will strike. What if your house is a total loss and you have. 5k deductible but no 5k?

Insurance makes me so shitty. There's no reason I need to pay $50 for one aspirin.
Yup! It's how the hospitals hope to get the worth of that aspirin back. The insurance companies won't say what they'll pay until after the bill is dropped..so hospitals guess on the value to bill. In reference to why hospitals won't let you pay in cash what the insurance would pay is because of Medicare guild lines. If Medicare found out you had a discount then the hospital could lose the contract..which means it basically would close. So basically people who pay in cash have to pay full bill..where insurance companies get a discount. Sucks I know! Lovely policies and rules!

With our house fire, we only had a $500 deductible but it was just deducted from what they paid out to us.
We got $500 check from our red cross the night of the fire and we didnt have anything from insurance until 3ish months later. We had a lot of clothes given to us from friends and people at church which was a big help.
In the end, our house fire turned out really well because now we actually have equity in our really old house, where before it might have just barely been worth what we owed.
