1. If we pay to have someone else have a title, will they know who it is from?
2. Are the titles permanent, or at least until they are requested to be removed/until another comes along or is there a time period -you keep the title for xx days then it erases?
3. I'm not entirely sure how the crowdfund works. Will we all know how much money is in there? How transparent will this be? Honestly, this question is more nosy than anything. It won't affect how much I do or don't pay.
1. I'll let NariaDreaming answer this, but my thought is yes?
2. The titles are permanent unless it is requested that they be removed.
3. Also an answer for NariaDreaming, she's in a meeting and I'm sure she'll come respond when she has a free moment.
1) I'm gonna go with yes
2) ditto to what theo said
3) I can take screen shots of the paypal account and blur out information and donation amounts.

What forum software are you thinking of going with, NariaDreaming, ? I never saw it up on the new domain.
We are sticking with proboards as the software for the forum. Down the road we may switch to their white-label version
Proboards is pretty much the only forum software we don't have experience with (outside of user). I don't know how resource hungry the software is, but, hopefully you're getting good guidance there as to what TCF will need, server wise. We do have various servers at DreamHost- like 'em fine.
This is NariaDreaming's area, but honestly I don't believe we could afford the costs to make the forum ad-free with proboards without using advertising. Our quote to do this was $1000+, that might have been monthly. In addition with having to cover hosting for the website and such, AND eventually the hope that we can actually pay people something for their content, ads are a necessity to helping keep the forum alive and growing. Otherwise we're going to die a slow death. Dramatic sounding, but mostly true and people on many boards are already noticing that this is happening without a regular influx of newbs, which we hope the website will bring.

I kind of just meant that I would donate x amount of dollars and I could have the forum ad free for a specific amount of time. This is how other forums I've been on have worked.
We have too many people and pageviews for that to really be an option. I believe you could pay for ad-free for the forum, but it would be for about 50,000 page views starting out and that would last 1/5 of a day. The $1200 quote was a monthly cost to make the forums ad-free and it was discounted because it would be paid monthly for ___ period of time. I believe it would end up being around $50 to make the forums ad-free for just one day.

I know you can pay proboards for that if that answers your question. I've accidentally clicked in it a few times. Not sure if you can do it on mobile.

I did some searching and it looks like it's $6 per month for 50,000 pageviews to be ad-free. We average between 250,000-350,000 pageviews a day. So I think my approximating of $40-50 a day to be ad-free is pretty close to accurate. That's just not sustainable.
Now, individual users can pay proboards for an ad-free experience. for $2.99 for a monthly subscription or $3.99 for one month only. This money goes to Proboards. You can do this in your profile under the "Gifts" tab.
I don't understand how the message board will die a slow death without new users if there are at least 100 active, daily users.
GKU is already slowing down- people are either graduating to a BMB, or moving to 3T/IF. Eventually 3T/IF will slow down when all of the members get pregnant or decide to pursue adoption, or decide to live child-free.
Most birth month boards last 2-3 years before they fizzle out and disappear into the abyss of uselessness, and people will only make so many laps from GKU to a BMB, back to GKU, back to a BMB until their family is complete.

redbears, we're also seeing a slow down on the loss, IF, and other similar boards. Over time this will get worse if we are not doing something to draw people into the forums. Everything we are doing right now is to try to keep the forums going strong.
@amyg can tell you a lot about what happens when forums are not able to bring in new members. She's made some great posts about this in the past.
Is there a way to see how close we are to reaching the fundraising goal?
We're at $930 right now give or take (a couple of international gifts are pending, and it hasn't posted the exchange rate yet) SO getting close to our 6 month hosting goal, and a bit shy of 50% of our year-long hosting goal

NariaDreaming, Have you thought about DreamHost's virtual private servers? DH (ETA: As in, my husband- that was confusing with DreamHost in the same paragraph) has been setting up more of them lately. Cheaper (a lot) and very comparable stats.
Forums are a tough sell anymore- just in general- FB and other social platforms just obliterated them. It is tough work to keep them going- I really appreciate that.
I'll even unblock ads when they aren't controlled by (and solely benefiting) PB.

I'm currently a member of two of them[dead boards]. I still check in every single day because it's been a habit for so long.
You can go to www.sybermoms.com to see an example of one such board. It was the TOP message board for parenting issues for many years with way more hits per day that this one gets or even the bump. It was honest advice for parenting, as well as telling people like it is with no fluff. Sometimes bitchy, mostly just brutally honest support. Their rule to prevent backpeddling was no editing ever, and the only real rules aside from that were no posting private info and no ragging on someone's kid. They never banned anyone either, cause they learned banning people they just come back as someone else. lol
The other one is private and still hanging on with a core membership that has been around together for about 15 years. We average about 5 new posts a day, with about 20 replies. WE get new members mostly from old members inviting a real life friend.
Both are spin off boards from breastfeeding.com
Now a good landing page with history and info about who they are and such was the ONLY THING sybermoms had the whole time, they never had a website attached.
Basically they really died off when the admins who were dealing with legal, server, hosting, spammers, database mess ups, and all that for 15 years got tired of doing the work and sold the board to someone who would take care of all that supposedly for the ad revenue. Well there are also paid memberships that come with perks for certain levels of payment that helped pay the bills for the dedicated server etc.
The first thing the new owners did was get rid of the history page and the story of sybermoms and there was no longer a landing page. With exodus of so many to facebook it was the nail in the coffin.
