They used to be and most still are.
Birthday parties as an adult are usually thrown by the birthday person and I either give a gift or by them a shot depending on venue.
House warming parties - it was customary at one time that when a someone bought their first home you would bring something that they might need like Mixing bowls or a blanket or Spice rack.
Weddings - never seen more gift giving then at a wedding which is normally paid for my the couple these days.
Engagement parties also usually throw now a days by the happy couple as well of they want to. It can be customary to give a card to congratulate the couple on there engagement. Some people also give a small monitory gift as well.
Graduation parties are not mentioned but most college graduates have a small party and tend to also get a card with money.
ETA : Gifts are not expected but i'm just say's in most cases it's customary just like sending thank you notes are.
Aside from weddings. Which, again, are not gift giving occasions.
