I've totally licked a 9v battery. I have also cut the cord of a radio that was plugged in and on....never did that again.

I totally agree w/ this! When we were on a family vacation a couple weeks ago my DD was climbing on a brick fireplace, and everybody kept getting really nervous and telling me they didn't like it. I was like "why, what is the worst that can happen?" "She could fall and hit her face on the bricks" "Um, so". I hit my face on our brick fireplace when I was about 3 or 4 years old, and yes there was some (ok a lot) of blood, but I didn't die and after my mom put ice on my lip and got a couple stitches I was good as new in a day. Of course you don't want your kid to put their teeth threw their lips, but their kids it's going to happen! I don't want my kids to be afraid of everything. Falling off the monkey bars and breaking your arm isn't life threatening, heck as a kid it is even a badge of honor.

It is a shame that kids aren't even able to walk to school anymore. When I was little if you lived w/in a mile of the school (we didn't, but there were a number of kids who did) you didn't have bus transportation, not anymore. My niece and nephew live behind their school, you seriously can see the top of the building and wouldn't have to even walk along the road to get there, but they are not allowed to walk to school. They have a 20min bus ride instead.

Unknown, Is there a highway near the school? I worked in a district that bussed all the kids because there was a highway that went by the school. If we lived closer to my kids' school, I'd let them walk when they are in school. I always walked to school.

ETA: Whoops, hit post too early! As for the climbing thing, I actually had another parent grab DS once because he was *gasp* climbing on a ladder at the playground and slipped slightly but didn't fall. Her grabbing him actually made him lose his grip on the ladder. I was really upset, and when I told her that he was fine and to let him be, she insisted he needed adult help. I'm pretty sure I know what my then-3-year-old is and is not capable of on a playground better than a complete stranger. Even if he had fallen, he was like a foot off the ground covered by wood chips. He wouldn't have even been hurt.

I did all of those as a child! I want to find a magnifying glass now and go out with son and teach him how to burn leaves!
