I layer a shirt over a tank, pull the shirt up and the tank down. It keeps everything covered.
I only have two or three actual nursing tanks. THIS STYLE CAMI with the adjustable straps are my favorite.
I use nursing bras for the first few months to make things easier, but after a while I switch to a regular bra and fold the cup down and tuck it under my boob.

I have never worn a nursing tank. I wear scoop neck or vneck shirts that I can pull down, and either use a cover or nurse lo in a carrier (so the top of my boob isn't that visible). Sometimes I'll pull my shirt down and soft vneck bra up so only my nipple is out.

I have a few nursing tanks I lived in in early days, but I got them on sale and they really aren't necessary. Just get some nice, long, stretchy Camis and layer like @honeylemon says. If it's easier to pop yourself out of the top, a strategic scarf or a&a blanket can help with privacy as you get situated. I'd often do that and then rearrange so leah didn't have cover over her face.
Once supy regulated, I invested in two amazing nursing bras from Nordstrom. They gave good shape and would hold flanges for a makeshift hands free pumping setup. Once I adjusted to not pumping at work, I go fitted again in just regular bras. I fold them down when we nurse.

I just wore regular clothes maybe a bit less form fitting but I was kinda chunky anyways. Id sit down with the tail of my shirt not tucked under my butt. Unhook bra flap thru neck of shirt. Position baby and pull up shirt and pulling down bra flap and latch on. Baby's head covers the whole process from onlookers unless thru are standing right by your chair which they seldom do.
Pull edge of shirt tail down to cover top of breast. Arm and baby covers just about everything else. If a square of skin shows so be it. If baby Unlatched suddenly you have your free arm ready to pull shirt down quickly to cover.
Im in Phoenix az. Trying to layer too many things for mom was hot. Trying to cover baby while nursing was also too hot. Pulling shirt down means top of boob would show and id feel like I had to cover it which would be hot.
So that's what I did and never bought nursing clothes specifically except a few things with my first until I realized how it all was a way to make me spend money lol.

I have one morning bra which I love because I can ditch my bra (freedom!!!!!). I mostly just wear scoop necks. I still get drenched in milk no matter what

I had nursing camis from target and Walmart that were around $16 a piece. Then I just wore a normal shirt over it. When I would nurse, I would pull the normal shirt up and then unclip the cami. No exposed belly and no exposed top boob.
I think I'll just use regular camis this time because they are stretchy enough and a lot cheaper. But still do the one shirt up, one shirt down trick.

That's basically what I do. I have some long stretchy camis from costco and I wear a top over it. I normally pull the shirt up and the cami down, but sometimes I pull them both down and use a cover.

Pretty much this for me as well. I liked the nursing tanks in the beginning, but then those damn clips got annoying.
They have little hooks so you can clip them onto your bra (nursing or non). They're basically a cami without the extra straps, so when you unclip your nursing bra, it pulls the cami down with it. I thought they were so convenient, but they're still ~$20 each if you buy the pack of 2.

I layered with Old Navy cami underneath. They have nude colored v neck cami that can be pulled down. They go on sale for about $3 a pop. Google Old Navy Cami.

I just wear my regular clothes. I sometimes wear a nursing tank under them to cover my belly, like PPs mentioned. There's no way I'd buy a whole new wardrobe just for nursing, buying myself new bras about broke the bank.

I usually use v-necks now but when I started nursing I bought nursing tanks from Baby Town (local to Phoenix) or Buy Buy Baby. They usually have sales so you can get one for $15 if you buy 2.

My tanks from costco were getting wonky from stretching them down under my boob but they're something like $5 each so it's not a big deal. If I find $3 at ON I'll be getting some of those. I've also just worn a belly band to keep my stomach covered while I pull my shirt up. The only things that are truly impossible to nurse in are dresses that you can't pull under your boob and tops that you can't pull up over your boob.
ETA: I was wearing my belly band off and on for a couple of months while I was in between pants anyways. I wouldn't necessarily buy one just for this purpose.
