Has anyone dealt with thrush yet? How long did it take to go away? My LO is two weeks and we just started treating it. The oral medication makes her throw up and just miserable in general, it's breaking my heart.
Ongoing struggles? Pumping. I am not responding well to the pump and so not able to stash away much. This worries me for when I eventually go back to work. Also, he is still eating every 2-3 hours around the clock, and I'm so, so tired.
Struggles that you have worked through? Painful latching. It has gotten much better as my nipples have gotten used to it.
How long do you plan/hope to BF? Hoping for a year, but am worried about my supply lasting that long.
Do you have a lot of support for BF IRL? Yes, my H and mom are very supportive.

I hope nobody minds if I kind of skip the layout but I wanna cut to my concern! LO is 12 days old and I've noticed that she's gulping at my left breast and not swallowing much at the right. I always nurse one breast per feeding. The right also isn't feeling as firm like the supply is low. I'm now trying to start on the right every session but I feel like I'm wasting her energy on a boob that isn't producing! If I just keep putting her to it can I still get this breast to start producing more even though I'm almost two weeks PP? I tried pumping and only got some drips so I'm freaking out a bit.

you can just put her to the lower supply breast more often and it will balance out. one side usually has a higher supply, is a bit larger breast and is more comfy position to hold baby so we tend to favor that side ourselves. being more careful with putting her on the other side more often will help. you may want to do two feeds on the right with one feed on the left. or favor the left later in the day when supply is lower and favor the right more in the am when supply is higher also you really don't want to hear her gulping, it may be a sign that side actually has a bit too much milk and a bit too fast of a flow. lol. you are early on, it's even possible that the amt on each side will switch up and then you'll be worrying about the left side instead of the right.
I'm heading to bed but I'll look thru this thread in the morning to see if there is anything I can add to try to help. Hope everyone gets a bit of sleep tonight.
How old is your LO? Will be 4 days tomorrow Ongoing struggles? Right now we're doing well but he swallows a kit of air and is gassy Struggles that you have worked through? This time is easier because I breastfeed ds 1 for 2.5 years
How long do you plan/hope to BF? As long as necessary.
Do you have a lot of support for BF IRL? dh is really supportive as are some friends I met in lamaze class for ds 1. I also felt sheepish about breastfeeding ds so long bit got a high five from the lactation consultant who said it definitely helped me have milk even though I was at high risk for not having it due to post partum hemmorage. Actually the pediatrician confirmed this morning that lo had gained over 2 oz since I left the hospital and congratulated me since most babies are still losing weight at the first appointment (the day after you go home from the hospital)
I had mastitis that seems to be cleared up but I have HORRIBLE nipple pain still. I am not certain if I have developed thrush or if it is her latch.
I BF DS1 until 21m. I would prefer not to go that long. Maybe 18m?
DH is totally pro bfing.
Does the nipple pain feel like glass going out thru your nipples at the beginning of a feed? Are nipples extra pink and shiney possibly itchy and flakey? Any signs of white in baby's mouth that when you rub it off it's bright red underneath? If you have antibiotics with mastitis then thrush is a reflux possibility

If you are squirting the med in her throat and hitting the wrong spot they'll gag and throw up every time. Try squirting more on the sides instead of straight back into her throat.
Usually you'll begin to have some relief in a couple days. But continue treatment longer than that. Be sure you are sterilizing everything that touches mouth nips or breastmilk

Def feels extremely painful. Glass could describe it. It goes away after a few minutes. Not certain if I get used to it or if she is changing her latch. Pink on parts of the nipple, not the whole though. I have seen white in her mouth but wasn't sure if it was milk. I will try to rub it to see if it is red under.
Thrush is just out if control yeast growth. Yeast eats sugar and pees alcohol which burns a lot. After a bit the pain subsides as all the alcohol is washed out of the ducts.
If you had antibiotics then thrush is likely. Of course could be "just" initial latching pain or a bit if a bad latch still. I would get it cked by LC if possible
Ladies who pump, how are you storing your bm in the fridge? We've been using bottles but LO is starting to use the big bottles for feedings now. Should I bite the bullet and just go out to buy more bottles? I don't pump enough for a freezer stash and we use what I've pumped within two days.
I use bottles for the current stash because I think the bags can get messy when poring them back into the bottle. You have to use the bottle anyway, so for me it was just saving a step. I use the bags for my freezer stash though. I actually found the Medela bottles for the cheapest on the Walgreens website and if you spend over $25 you get free shipping. You can go onto the Medela website and they give links to all of the places that sell bottles and accessories.
Be careful the medela bags often leak. I think there are other bags that seal better like targets breastmilk freezer bags. Freezing bottles would take up more room. If storing in the fridge done just pour all the milk you pump extra for that day in bottles or in like a Rubbermaid or Tupperware type juice pitcher and refill bottles as you go. Kinda depends on how far ahead of baby you get.
Keep on mind that breastfed babies rarely take larger than 4 oz maybe 5 at a time do most moms never use the larger 8/9 oz bottles but those would work ok for storage of two feeds in less space in the fridge.
Ongoing struggles? Working on her latch. She had a posterior tongue tie that was repaired yesterday. Prior to that, her latch was shallow and caused cracking and bleeding. It got to the point where I was EPing for the past few days just so I could heal. She's doing a lot better now and is starting to figure it out, but still occasionally falls back into the shallow latch. We're seeing the LC on Saturday just to see if there's anything else I should be doing in terms of positioning, etc.
Struggles that you have worked through? Just the above.
How long do you plan/hope to BF? I'd like to get to a year again. I EBF DD1 until 8 mos, then supplemented until she self weaned at a year. My goals are similar this time around.
Do you have a lot of support for BF IRL? Yes, most of my friends BF and DH is super supportive. My mom also BF so she knows the deal. And my in laws are also supportive, though they didn't BF so don't understand the struggles in quite the same way.
With shallow latching try the laid back nursing position where gravity can help pull baby deeper onto the breast. Also be sure that in cradle or cross cradle hold, your nipple should be closer to baby's nose than mouth so baby sort of reaches upward to latch on. They tilt their head backwards as they open up wider to get a deep latch. It's the asymmetrical latch with baby's lower lip touching the breast first and at the areola fairly close to the nipple and you squish the breast kind of flat and stuff in as much areola as you can with the nipple too. Some say it's like how you eat a big Mack.
Sometimes you can figure it out by watching latching videos online. If course help in person is ideal so hope that visit really helps on sat
I have a small painless lump on my right breast, off to the right, just above my nipple.
Should I be concerned?
I've read that you can point baby's nose towards the lump while nursing to work it out or to get on all fours and nurse with your breast dangling down...I had one last go round but am not entirely sure how I fixed it, but I did go t to the doctor ads they gave me a breast ultrasound to make sure it wasn't harmful...I think they did it becausealso had lumps in my armpits, which I an guessing are extra milk ducts. Right now those are swollen and won't go down, I hope they will because they are kind of annoying.
Weird, after I posted I realized I have the lump again so I looked up an article on getting rid of it kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/mastitis/ I thought I was just having an achy, full breast but there is a lump on the underside, good thing you brought this up!
Ongoing struggles? Pain when latching. I have had a LC look at his latch and she said it looked great and that the pain was probably from using a nipple shield for so long and it would go away. That was 2 weeks ago
Struggles that you have worked through? Got rid of the nipple shield about 3 weeks in! Weight gain issues. Pain, oh the pain!
How long do you plan/hope to BF? Hoping to BF (or at least pump) until he is a year. I'd like to continue to pump until he is 15-16 months as I was a pretty sickly baby and would like to help boost his immune system even more.
Do you have a lot of support for BF IRL? Yes. My mom leads a la Leche league group. She has lots of LC friends and I got tons of support when needed. My sister is also EBFing right now as well as several friends which is helpful as well!

Thanks for the advice! I am using a q-tip to wipe it on her tongue and around her mouth. I found that doing it in between feelings has stopped the throwing up. I haven't been sterilizing everything though, I will definitely start that today! It's getting better but very slowly. Thanks again!!!
Ongoing struggles? None, I'm a bit surprised I don't have an oversupply this go 'round, as when I BF'ed my other 3 I could have fed a baby army. But I am grateful to have enough milk for DD and since I'm a SAHM, I really don't need to worry about pumping extra anyways.
Struggles that you have worked through? None. After the first week of bleeding and crazy painful nips, it's been smooth sailing.
How long do you plan/hope to BF? I will BF until DD is 1yr, as I did with my 3 boys.
Do you have a lot of support for BF IRL? TONS!! DH is all for it, especially because it's free. LOL I also have several close girlfriends who are L&D nurses and they support it completely. Pretty much all moms I know IRL have at least attempted BFing, so it's no big deal to BF in front of them whether it's in my home, their home or public. No one even thinks twice.
Could be a clogged duct. Massage it while bf or pumping. Also heat from a shower will help work it out as well.
Eta: not something to be overly concerned about ... they are pretty common.
Thank you! I'm bfing and it would be difficult to massage the lump since it is so close to my nipple. Is hot shower and massage during enough?
Hmmm depends on your body really. I'm only pumping and most of mine work themselves out while pumping. See how the bump is after your next feed. The link someone posted in this thread about clogged ducts has more advice too.
Sweet Jesus my right nipple is cracked. Is this a cruel joke?
Oh no! I'm so sorry. This might be a dumb question, but does it hurt? I hope it heals soon.
It hurts. Its not bleeding, so I know it could be worse. I've lowered the suction, spaced out pumps to every three hours today and am buttering my nips!
I FINALLY had my baby - we were doing great with the colostrum but now the milk has come in (like, today) and she's having latch trouble. Also I'm finding it massively painful to be engorged.

Congratulations! Try self expressing a little before putting her up. Some babies struggle to latch while mom is engorged because your boobs aren't as flexible to get in their mouths.

I massaged mine and expressed so baby could latch better. I c-cupped my breast to turn my nipple up to stimulate the roof of baby's mouth.

I'm normally a bit of a skeptic when it comes to stuff like this but I've been using essential oils to increase my milk production the last few days. It has been working almost too good! LO is definitely having a growth spurt and is wanting to eat every hour during the day. I was worried I wasn't producing enough since she was constantly hungry. I've used it twice now before bed and I wake up with soaked sheets and very full breasts (unlike anything before). I'm going to try using it in the mornings too. I thought I'd share this in case anyone struggling with milk production wanted to try. I don't know much about oils but it is a blend of sweet basil and fennel in oat and olive oil.
I have oversupply...and its pretty uncomfortable. Any suggestions?
I was pumping every 2 hours and when I checked I was making 50-52oz/day and feeding LO about 25oz. Last week I cut down to pumping every 3 hours. The amount I'm making has not decreased at all. Now I'm just engorged all the time. How can I decrease my supply a little? Cut out another pump or two?
