Transition from Crib to bed/daybed?

I was wondering when everyone is thinking about moving the kids from the crib to a day bed/ big kid bed? My crib converts to a cute day bed with a partial rail on the outside (picture).  I was think of transitioning her around 2 years.

Not in a rush. We are thinking around 2.5 yrs. But if she can pull herself out of the crib before then, then we will get a toddler bed.

Our crib converts as well but we plan toehold off as long as possible. All bedrooms in our house are upstairs and he knows how to open the doors already and had partially figured out baby gates. Until we know and feel he won't fall down the stairs he's stuck in the crib.

He has never tried to climb out of his crib though either.

I answered 26 months because we transitioned DD1 from the crib to a twin bed at 27 months and probably had her crib as a "day bed" or whatever (the front rails were off) for a couple weeks before that.

But we transitioned her at that time in anticipation of DD2. I'll keep DD2 in the crib probably longer than that - maybe to 2.5? - or earlier if she tries to climb out.

Somewhere I read suggested a lot of kids are in cribs until 3!??! While DD1 never tried to climb out and as I said, we transitioned her for other reasons, I can't imagine her in her crib at 3! We'll see what this one is like...

We have a very similar style crib zandeela. I'm planning on waiting until 2-ish or until he tries to climb out on his own.

We've got the same bedroom issue lakecountrygal. Just outside the master bedroom door is a full flight of straight wooden stairs. I don't care how well the upstairs baby gate is mounted, the idea of him having free reign over the upstairs while we're asleep is scary.

As Late as possible. I'm terrified about her getting up in the middle of the night and getting stuck in a cord or drawer or something. I'm terrified about a lot of things though.

I'm thinking around 2 years we'll start thinking about it.

My dad is into wood working and actually made our crib for us. It's modeled after THIS ONE and he can make it transition like yours zandeela.

Buuut, since we are TFAS, I was thinking about maybe just buying E a new bed and keeping her in the crib until we need it for the LO? Dunno. She hasn't started trying to climb it yet, so fingers crossed that it's a ways away.

As late as possible. Probably around age 3 if not older. Knowing him, as soon as we take him out he will be a 5am wake up time. He currently wakes up between 5:30-6:30am and babbles for a good 15-20min and then falls back asleep till 7:30-8. If he sees an exit, he will be up and out!

I'm surprised I'm alone on this.... If your child doesn't try to climb out before 2 consider yourself lucky (unless physical issues!)
Levi is already on a full size bed, mattress on the floor. We choose that as a way to get him out of our bed. He did great the first week, only woke once or twice and I soothed him back to sleep. Over the last two weeks it's gotten worse which of course means it's me not being consistent! School starts for my older boys next Monday so we will be very consistent from here out.

To me safety is first so if they are climbing out no matter their age they need out. Toddler bed, mattress on the floor whatever you choose it's better than a late night head injury.  None of my boys were in a crib more than a few months past two due to this.

edit because it sounded harsh to your ideas/plans and that is not my intention.  I just have a differing view/experience.

We will wait until she tries to climb out or we are at a point where we are night potty training her. Def not before 2 (eta: for potty trainjng).

Obviously if she starts climbing out of the crib we would start the transition sooner. But if all is status quo, I'd wait as late as possible.

+1 The only other reason is because we are TFAS. Once we are KU I will transition Carter into a full size bed that is low to the floor around 3 months before baby #2 arrives.

I really thought by her second birthday we would have her transitioned and the new baby could have her crib but now I'm thinking that's not the best of plans. She climbed out once but we realized it could still be lower and now she is nowhere near able to get out. I guess time will tell for us but no immediate plans.

@kellbell If J were trying to escape the crib he'd be in a toddler bed by now. So far it hasn't occurred to him to try and I'm not about to suggest it.

LO climbed onto a dining chair for the first time yesterday (the are bar height!) which makes me feel like the end is coming... Damn little climber won't stay off of anything!
