Hi ladies,
I asked this question on one of my home boards (PAIF) and got some good info, but thought I'd also try here. I'm due in Nov with our first LO and know very little about baby gear. My husband wants me to register for the mamaroo to see if we get it (I doubt that we'd splurge for ourselves). Ive also read a lot about the Rock n Play on here. I think that I've gathered that they are different and having both wouldn't be stupid but I'd like to hear more experiences about having both or just one of them.

I have both and consider them both high up on our "essential baby stuff" list, though the rock 'n play a bit higher than the mamaroo.
We use the rock 'n play as a bassinet next to the bed and our baby slept in it for most of his first 4 months, we travel with it and still use it on occasions when he's not sleeping well or it's too hot/cold elsewhere etc.
The mamaroo is a sanity saver and the only swing I've ever owned so I couldn't tell you if it's the mamaroo-ness or the swing-ness, but I would say have something you can put baby in and have it rock independent of your physical energy (a la rock 'n play requires your input to rock it, and that vibe function they're peddling on the new models may or may not soothe your babe) totally like having an extra pair of hands.
We didn't register for either now that I think of it... Had the rock 'n play handed down to us and discovered it was our favorite baby "stuff" item (we lovingly call it "bassy") and bought the mamaroo week 3 after our sanity started crumbling as baby wanted constant motion soothing, but every babe is different.
If you do go mamaroo, the older model is totally great in my book, here's a good breakdown video.
I was anti mamaroo when I was pregnant. My parents offered to buy one and I turned them down...multiple times (must have been the hormones). Then we hit a phase when DS was about 8 weeks old where he only wanted to sleep when held and would wake up every time I tried to put him down. I had a cheap graco swing that he would fall asleep in, but the pos motor died the 2nd time I used it. Thankfully my parents offered again to buy a mamaroo and it was the greatest. DS slept in it until he was about 4 months old. It was such a lifesaver and I will start any future kiddos in it right away.
I never tried a rnp, but if I do have another baby and see one on sale, I would get it since they fold pretty small and we could use it for our room or travel or whatever. You will want options for potential places for your baby to sleep which is not something I planned for when pregnant. I naively thought my kid would sleep in his crib.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I never got notifications for most responses, so thankfully I just thought to check back again
The rock n' play was the only thing my DD would sleep in for the first two months of her life, except my arms. It was a life saver. If you do get one I would splurge on the auto rock feature.
I don't have a momaroo so I can't comment on that. We didn't even add it to our registry because it just seemed too expensive for a swing.

rachaeleigh, FWIW the rock n play was the most highly recommended baby product in our "best and worst of your registry" poll. 1/3 of the moms that responded said it was the #1 best thing they registered for
