DH wrote this and I'm so proud of him for capturing the essence and life of his mother so eloquently:
An infectious smile; a loving heart; and a boisterous laugh (which often came at inappropriate moments) is a small part of the legacy left by our dear Ivy Keith (lastname), who peacefully departed this life at her home in Cityname, NY on Wednesday the 26th of August.
Born in Georgetown, Guyana, South America, to the loving union of Woodward and Josephine (lastname) on Febraury 21st, 1942, Keith (as she was affectionately called by family and friends) was a child of strong will and determination. She could often be found engrossed by her studies, particularly in literature, at St. Joseph’s Convent, fiercely competing in tennis and field hockey or fighting off her brother Michael’s neighborhood bullies.
After working for Guyana Airways, Ivy migrated to Montreal, Canada before moving to New York, New York in 1968. During her time in New York, Keith began her postsecondary education at Hunter College, while simultaneously working at the United Nations. She retired there as a Title Assistant in 1995. Her work at the UN was rewarding and afforded her enriching opportunities to travel to various parts of the world. She was particularly proud of an assignment in conjunction with The Office of the Commissioner for Namibian Affairs, where she served as a part of the fact finding/negotiating team whose initiatives secured independence for Namibia from South Africa.
During a (not-so) chance meeting at the United Nations, Ivy met her rock and life partner John Middlename Lastname. From their union, they were blessed with a baby boy, MyDH, who she adored and unapologetically spoiled rotten.
Keith was a thoughtful sister to Lucille (dec.), Shirley (dec.), Michael and Mignon (dec.); an affectionate aunt to Allison Lastname, Adrian, Walter (dec.), Michael (dec.), Roland, Andrew, Lezlie and Allison Lastname; a loving mother-in-law to ME; a doting grandmother to KJ; and a dedicated cousin to many. Her spirit lives on through the countless memories of her refreshing honesty, impeccable sense of style, easygoing demeanor and uncanny ability to offer timely words of love and encouragement.
Ivy spent her days dancing like no one was watching, saying “I Love You” as often as possible and embracing laughter as a true gift. Those that she touched are all better for the short time she spent with them. Her earthly presence will be truly missed beyond measure.
