We are very excited to announce that we are partnering with the Detroit Community Development Center and the Detroit Police Department to host a diaper drive to benefit low-income families in the Detroit metro area.
1 in 3 American families struggle with diaper need, not having enough diapers for their baby. Annually, Diaper Need Awareness Week draws national attention to this consequence of poverty.
September 28-Oct 4 is Diaper Need Awareness Week, and we could think of no community more deserving than Detroit.
The Detroit Diaper Bank closed its doors in 2014- and it was the largest resource for diapers for shelters in the Metro Detroit Area.
There is NO support for diapers from WIC, Food Stamps, or Medicare, and unfortunately many Detroit-area daycare centers require disposable diapers. According to the 2012 census, 42.3% of Detroit families are living at or below the poverty line, and the financial situation of the residents has continued to decline since the city declared bankruptcy.
Those families living in extreme poverty do not have easy access to big box discount stores, meaning that their diaper purchases mostly occur at c-stores within walking distance, where diapers are sold at inflated prices.
This announcement will be updated once we have solidified the nonprofit's wishlist- we will be offering both an Amazon Wishlist option, with the diapers being shipped directly to the nonprofit we are working with. Additionally, there will be a link where you can give a gift of cash, allowing the nonprofit to purchase diapers in bulk from wholesalers if you prefer to give that way.
Diapers for the D info
- Goal of 80,000 diapers and $5,000 in donations
- Collaboration between a group of High School students, the Detroit PD, and Detroit Community Development Centers
