Our second baby gave us a big surprise last week and made her appearance early. It was short and intense, but we were so happy to meet our new addition Fiona!
Interesting observations I made during labor:
1) When nurses tell you to do something, they mean it.
2) Some things are optional when you arrive at the hospital almost complete.
3) Bodily fluids really are NBD in L&D.
Long story for anyone interested:
I had my 39 week appointment early last week. I had been having some random contractions, so I decided to have a cervical check. I was 2.5-3 cm and her head was low. The OB said he thought the real deal would happen this week. He also thought it might be a fast labor, so be prepared to get to the hospital.
On Thurs I decided to walk. I was hoping that baby Fiona would make her appearance over the weekend, so I figured walking over the next couple of days would help that along. When we got home I decided to organize a few things in the nursery. I was standing there putting pennies into a coin jar. I felt a warm gush and I knew my water had broken. It was 7:45 pm. We decided that we needed to put E to bed and get stuff organized to go to the hospital. I texted our doula to let her know that tonight would be the night.
I had a few random contractions over the next hour. They were weak and only lasted 30-40 seconds. I put E to bed and my H call his mom to come over and stay. His mom arrived at 9 pm. I was having more contractions but they were still weak and not really timeable. We decided to walk in front our our house to see if that would help get things going. After a few times up and down the contractions were stronger and more regular. They would be between 4 and 7 minutes. I decided to go inside since I did not want to be far away from the house. We went inside and I got into the tub.
At 9:30 I started to have timeable contractions. They were about 4.5 minutes apart and strong. They would last from 1 minute to a bit longer. At 10 pm my H decided that it was time for our doula to come over. He let her know to meet us at our house. At 10:30 the contractions became 3 minutes apart. My H decided it was time to go to the hospital but I was unsure. It had only been an hour and I was worried it was to early.
I decided to go since my H thought it was time We got in the car and left at 10:45 pm. On the way I had 2 contractions when we pulled up I had the most intense contractions ever. I managed to make it to check in and got into triage. In triage I told them my water had broken and I was having intense contractions. The nurse said she would do a check first to make sure it was really my water. As soon as she checked me she said it was my water and that I was 8 cm. I was excited and scared. They wheeled me right to a room.
I asked the nurse for a bath. She ran the water and asked a few questions while it was filing (GBS results, IV etc). I refused an IV and asked to get in the tub. She said she wanted to check me first before I got in and check the baby. Fiona’s heartbeat was good and she was handling the stress well. The nurse gave me a check and I was 9-9.5 cm. At that point I forgot the tub. (I learned later that the nurse was not going to let me use it anyways since I was so close). I just screamed and moaned during the intense contractions. Suddenly I felt like I had to poop. I told the nurse that I needed to go to the bathroom. She told me that I could not go. That the pressure might be the baby. I told her that I pushed a baby out before and knew this was not pushing pressure. It was poop pressure. She told me that was fine, I could poop on the table because they saw it all the time and would clean it up.
I leaned over the bed the bed to deal with a few more contractions. All of a sudden I started pushing without any conscious thought. I yelled that I was pushing. The nurse started screaming that I had to lay down on the bed, I could not push the baby onto the floor without a doctor. I told her I couldn’t move. I just kept screaming and pushing. The nurse told my H to push the nurses button while she physically forced me onto the bed. She told me over and over to stop pushing. I couldn’t stop. That sensation to push is no joke. I finally paused between contractions. Our doula talked to me and got me to relax and stop screaming. The doctor rushed in and Fiona’s head was almost crowning. I pushed through two more contractions to get her out. She was here in just a few hours.
