Hey, southerners - I'll trade you my squash for your mac'n'cheese ANY DAY! Squash is the one thing at Thanksgiving that I never touch, but the rest of my (New England) family seems to think it's a necessity. I think it's slimy orange slightly sweet slop.
What does your family typically serve on Thanksgiving? My mom used to host and it was a full spread: turkey, potatoes, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn muffins, jello salad, assorted veggie sides over the years (creamed corn, spinach souffle, pumpkin soup, etc).
What is your one must-have item, aside from turkey? Stuffing. It there isn't stuffing don't call it Thanksgiving dinner.
What is the weirdest thing you've ever been served on Thanksgiving? As I mentioned above, my mom would try a new "surprise" dish each year. Some were better than others. Among the worst were zucchini canoes. Essentially, halved zucchini stuffed with veggies and eggs. Icky. My Italian MIL often serves lasagna as a side dish. It is delicious, but does not mesh with the meal.
Any other fun Thanksgiving anecdotes you want to share? It is absolutely my favorite holiday. I'm excited to host one year when we have a little more room, and I have a proper, full sized oven. Our kitchen is a good size, but for whatever reason, the previous owners put in a tiiiiiny oven, so no room for turkey.
There's a thanksgiving post on who-eats-what-where on Fivethirtyeight.com (blog from Nate Silver, stats guy who got famous around the 2012 election and predicted every state's choice for prez)!
I was amused to see mac'n'cheese on there! You cheese lovers from the southeast?
Love this! Looks like I live just outside the mac n cheese zone, but we're from the more southern part of MD so I guess our traditions blended a bit. Seriously though, Thanksgiving to me is all about comfort food, and what better comfort food is there than mac n cheese?
I'm kind of head tilting rolls/biscuits. Doesn't everyone have some sort of rolls or biscuits with their meal? I'm also lol'ing because the only place I've ever had a decent biscuit is south of the Mason Dixon line, so the idea of an Ohio or Michigan biscuit is not appealing.

What does your family typically serve on Thanksgiving? tortilla chips and corn dip and crudites as an appetizer, turkey (which I don't eat because I'm a vegetarian), stuffing (some cooked in the turkey and some cooked separate for the vegetarians), mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce from the can, homemade cranberry relish, green bean casserole, tomato pudding, jello molds (cranberry with fruit and nuts and green with mini marshmallows), pies, turkey-shaped cut out cookies
What is your one must-have item, aside from turkey? corn dip, stuffing, redi-whip directly from the can into your mouth
What is the weirdest thing you've ever been served on Thanksgiving? the tomato pudding my family makes is GROSS. A lot of people like it, but I try it every couple years and I always think it is disgusting.
Any other fun Thanksgiving anecdotes you want to share? We have the decorations that my brother and I made back in 1988 or so that we still put up on Thanksgiving. We have a banner that we made with Print Shop Pro on our old Apple IIgs, as well as a sign that says: "Welcome to this delicious Thanksgiving meal. There are two rules: 1. You must stuff your face with food. 2. Have fun!" We have put up these decorations every year for the past 25+ years. We also have pilgrim smurf figurines from the mid-80s that are an essential Thanksgiving decoration.
frecklesnbrains, I was also wondering about the squash thing and if it's really that big of a thing in New England. I went to Thanksgiving in Maine one year and don't remember what we ate, just that it was good. I'm pretty sure we didn't have squash though.
littleducky, there is so much that I love about your post! Redi-whip from the can? Pilgrim smurfs? AWESOME! I think we need a picture of the smurfs this year.

Here is an article about tomato pudding and a recipe. My grandparents always loved it and my parents love it, too, but I can't stand it. And there is very little food I don't like!
littleducky , there is so much that I love about your post! Redi-whip from the can? Pilgrim smurfs? AWESOME! I think we need a picture of the smurfs this year.
Happy to oblige! We head to my parents on Wednesday. I'll post some decoration photos.
littleducky, I keep forgetting you're an Ohio girl. The Toledo article threw me for a loop for a second but I just got lost on that website for a few minutes!
reading this thread is making so hungry and excited for Thanksgiving!!
What does your family typically serve on Thanksgiving? Turkey with gravy, stuffing, potato/sweet potato combo dish, Pilaf (rice dish), a vegetable or two (my mom has a few she picks from), cranberry sauce (from scratch!), Pumpkin Pie!
What is your one must-have item, aside from turkey? I think its a tie between Pilaf and Stuffing
What is the weirdest thing you've ever been served on Thanksgiving? So it's not weird to most people, but growing up we never had the sweet potatoes with marshmallow dish. MY MIL brought it to our first Thanksgiving together and it was the first time I had ever eaten it. It was a bit too sweet for me!
Any other fun Thanksgiving anecdotes you want to share? My sister and I always make the pie. We usually stay up way too late the night before giggling and baking. It's one of my favorite things

Boo. I live in a salad state. Ha ha. I am making Mac and cheese though.
Sorry but salad has absolutely no right to be at a Thanksgiving meal. Only carb-and-fat-filled dishes allowed. If you must have vegetables then they should be accompanied by huge amounts of butter, cheese, or marshmallows.

What does your family typically serve on Thanksgiving? Turkey (usually one roasted, one on the bbq), mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, my mom's sweet potato and orange dish, green beans, a green salad with grandma's dressing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie
What is your one must-have item, aside from turkey? I love homemade cranberry sauce (with turkey of course) and a good stuffing (sourdough bread, sausage, fennel)
What is the weirdest thing you've ever been served on Thanksgiving? Last year for some reason my grandmother did instant mashed potatoes which were less than delicious (we have a huge group and I suppose this was 'easier'. This year my cousin has graciously offered to do the potatoes (properly)
Any other fun Thanksgiving anecdotes you want to share? The first time I met my mother in law she visited DH and I over Thanksgiving, it was just the 3 of us (we lived in Minneapolis at the time away from all family). I love Thanksgiving and was really looking forward to doing all of the cooking and baking. The morning of I dropped something really heavy on my foot and broke a couple of toes. DH and MIL took over and everything was fine but I remember calling my own mother crying and her advice was to sit back, relax and drink a lot of wine to dull the pain. It worked.

This is fun!
What does your family typically serve on Thanksgiving? We are a turkey family. DH and I love thanksgiving so we are really picky about it and love it most when we get to cook!
What is your one must-have item, aside from turkey? tgete are a couple...home made cranberry sauce and sausage stuffing (an old family recipe). Also stuffed artichokes are something my dad always made so I am continuing the tradition.
What is the weirdest thing you've ever been served on Thanksgiving? dHs aunt is a TERRIBLE cook. A few years ago she hosted and just put the drippings from the turkey in the gravy boat so it was grease that ended up separating....so gross
Any other fun Thanksgiving anecdotes you want to share? Not off the top of my head. I can't wait!!!

Drippings straight into the gravy boat, omg. That cracks me up.
