I'm getting lower back pain when sleeping, it's not every night but most nights. I'm trying to figure out if it's the position I'm sleeping in, my new mattress being too firm, or if it's just another lovely pregnancy symptom.
With DD I had a Petunia Pickle Bottom bag. I didn't love it. But, it was useful. I think this time around I am going to just use a large bag. I felt that the diaper bag was rather cumbersome.
Hmm, FTM here wondering what the deal is with diaper bags. Do I really need a special bag? I'm mean, I know I WANT one... Maybe I should have put this in the dumb pregnancy questions thread.
I don't use one now, I use a big purse, and DS has a little backpack for when I drop him off places. However, with a baby, it's kind of nice to have compartments and pockets for everything (like bottles) since most purses that big are just one big compartment. Also, diaper bags can usually be wiped off, for if (when) you spill things in/on them. For me, the compartments is the biggest thing. I used it as my purse the first year, but I didn't love the bag I had because things still got lost in it easily. Not using a diaper bag now and the disaster my purse is makes me realize how much I'll need one with two kids (I tend to only bring essentials out with me too, not an overpacker).
Yeah this is what I figured. I do have a bunch of large bags including ones that can be wiped clean, but the lack of pockets might be an issue. I may wait and see how things go though... I'm REALLY trying to buy the BARE MINIMUM for this baby because a) we live in a tiny apartment that's already way too cluttered, b) we may move shortly before or after delivery, and c) not to mention we're watching our budget!
So I went to the Jujube website to start investigating some diaper bags. The BFF looks like a really nice bag, and I might get it. But, I cringed when I read the name and description of the "mommy pocket." I get that these are feminine bags and not marketed for men at all, it just sounds really obnoxious. Anyway, back to real problems now!
frecklesnbrains I would say if you're really trying to buy the minimum for baby, the only separate pockets that you *need* are 1-2 pockets that you can use to keep a bottle upright. Everything else (diapers, wipes, changing pad, change of clothes, snacks) can all be thrown into a bag or you can get a small organizer thing to throw into your bag. I would hesitate to just throw a bottle into the main compartment of a bag because of the potential for leaks, but maybe even putting them into a large zip lock bag might solve that problem and you wouldn't need pockets for those either. Now, of course, it will be impossible to find your cell phone in under 5 min if you do this!

Thanks babyzebra. That's super-helpful! It would be really nice if I were able to breastfeed on-the-go, thus not needing to carry a bottle around, but I realize I may need to be realistic about that goal. Of course that opens up another topic - a bag to carry pumping supplies. So much to think about!

It's nice to have but if you have a large purse or backpack those would work too. We put one in each vehicle and left it there so we were never without it and would restock as needed. There's a lot of stuff you need to always have. Diapers, wipes, extra clothes, diaper cream, bottles/snacks, burp cloths, paci, etc. having it all on hand will make outings much easier. I chose a $99 messenger type bag but got one on clearance for $30 and the other with a 20% off coupon. I love them and will be using them again. Oh and machine washable is important!!!
When I get a real one I always get a fresh cut on the bottom. Then at home I'll put some aspirin in the stand and I usually use warm water.
..... I am so, so intrigued by the use of aspirin....do you know what it does/is supposed to do? Because we brought food for the food bank, they gave us "tree preservative" - it's flower food. The exact same packet you get with a bouquet from a florist.
Apparently it doesn't really do anything according to Google. It was thought to extend the life but turns out it doesn't really do much.

Sounds like a great way to kill my cats... I think I'll skip it

I only used breastmilk with DS but still needed bottles. Especially for car trips. I pumped at work and the pump came with a separate bag for all of the supplies and bottle and ice packs.
Also you can buy a small separate cooler type thing for bottle to put into a bigger bag to prevent spills and make them easier to find if you don't have bottle pockets.

I would just carry around the bag that came with the pump and put all my supplies (even bottles in the cooler bag) in there, then leave it in the car. So you could do that and then carry large purse!

I know! That's annoying! My DH carried our diaper bag as much as I did when I was working!
Speaking of baby stuff in general, it's smart to try to go with the bare essentials and then just see what you need when baby gets here. I did that too. I've tried to do that with him as a toddler, but somehow I've ended up with so many big toys that take up so much room, ugh. I would put baby stuff in the closet or attic the day he outgrew them though.
frecklesnbrains, I totally agree with txmommy that it's best to get the bare essentials first if you aren't sure what you'll want/need. When the baby comes home, all they really need are diapers, clothes, a place to sleep and something to eat whether it's breast milk or formula. Everything else is extra, so if you're tight on space, money, or just don't want to commit to anything, wait and see!
We've had a crazy busy weekend! Yesterday we had a whirlwind trip to my hometown for tournament my husband was coaching at, a quick visit with my mom and stepdad, another quick visit with my dad and his gf, and a 2-year-old birthday party.
Today, we got our Christmas tree! It was a cut you own type place so we got it cut, struggled to tie it to our car, and then went to leave and my car wouldn't start. Thank goodness the owners of the farm had jumper cables right there! So now I'm taking a quick break before rearranging the living room so we can get the tree inside!
Thanks, he's on hour #4 of his nap. I keep going in there to check on him and he's all sweaty, but his temp is normal now and his breathing isn't labored. DH has the day off tomorrow, so DS will definitely stay home.

Poor guy Glad that his fever seems to be gone though. Hopefully he's just sleeping it off and will be back to himself after his nap!
I agree in starting with some bare essentials. But it was so much harder to get out of the house to buy something you need after the baby is here. And if you don't have a large registry you end up with a lot of clothes and blankets.
I think everyone is so different. With my DS, I was actually craving to leave the house, so I was at Target when he was 4 days old and at a restaurant for dinner that same night. But people have different recoveries, personalities, etc. I may feel totally different this time attempting to leave the house with 2!

Hope he's just sleeping the fever off, and that you've been able to get some extra rest with the long nap!

We went in walks around the neighborhood. But it was Christmas Eve when we brought him home and we had out of town guests at our house for a long time!!!

That's hard! A winter baby would be hard because of the weather and sickness going around. My DS was born at the end of March in Texas, which made it much easier. Maybe this time we won't leave the house because of the extreme heat here!
I've been getting bad cramps today. It makes me nervous, but I know cramping on and off is normal. I'm also feeling so nauseous that I think minor cramps maybe feel more serious, I don't know. PGAL brain always gets me the days leading up to my next appt (Thursday).
txmommy14, I've been cramping off and on today too but I've also been pushing myself this weekend more than usual and not drinking as much as I should. I psych myself out before appts too. Hope your cramping subsides and the nausea lets up soon!
So guys, we got our tree in the house and set up and this thing is huge. I swear it doubled in size between the tree farm and our house! It's comical and I can't stop laughing.

I was also out and about right away. Had DS on a Tuesday evening, we went home Thursday evening and we were at Target mid afternoon on Friday and out to dinner Friday night. All day Saturday we were out of the house to. I didn't stay home until Sunday and Monday. I can see this time being completely different because of having to take 2.

I'm so excited to be having a summer baby in New England! I hope to be out ASAP and as much as possible. I'm going to spend a large chunk of my maternity leave hanging out at my parents house on a lake in New Hampshire. And I want to get a carrier and do some hiking with him in the mountains. Sun protection will be tough though. Both DH and I are sooooooooo fair (especially me!). He won't be vitamin D deficient, for sure!
