Paging the lady's who deal with diabetes!

ExH showed up a little bit ago with the kids.  They flew.  It was surprise b/c of my little mental vacation.  Since they got here, DS1 has suddenly started coughing, complaining of a sore throat, aches, chills, and a 103.3 fever.  His blood sugar is 82 at the moment.  I'm pretty sure the fucking flu is here. 

I'm waiting on the doctor to call back, but I have no clue if/what I need to do differently since he has diabetes.  He's never been really sick since his diagnosis.  Do I need to take him to the ER?

No experience with diabetes just wanted to say I hope your kiddo feels better soon!

Offer him liquids with sugar-regular gingerale, Popsicles and juice to keep him hydrated and also so that you can keep giving insulin. Test for ketones every.time.he urinates. If he can keep food down nothing super carby but normal foods and always give insulin. I'm sure you know this but when they are sick there bodies can respond by making ketones even with a normal bloodsugar. The key is giving insulin.

Also check Blood sugars about every 2 hours to make sure everything is ok

Our doc says no ER unless ketones and or vomiting are present and you cannot get them under control

Famous pretty much covered it. Make sure he stays hydrated and is still taking his basal insulin. (Not sure if he's on a pump or not.)

He will be running higher than usual since he's fighting an infection. So just watch for DKA symptoms and ketones.

If he is so sick, has insulin on board and is running low, that would prompt me to go to the ER.

Doctor still hasn't called back, so I called again. BS keeps dropping, and in an hour his fever hasn't budged. He also hasn't needed to pee.

Syllessa - is he on a pump or Shots? If on a pump, you might try doing a temp basal to reduce his background insulin while you try and figure out the hypoglycemia.

Can he keep down Gatarade? Ginger ale?

Shots, because he prefers them. So far he's keeping things down.

Okay then I'd agree with Famous about pushing more fluids. Especially if he can keep them down.

A hypoglycemic episode that lasts through 2 treatments and doesn't recover in 30-45 minutes warrants an ER trip regardless of the flu.

He's asleep, and so far his bs has stayed alright. He's drinking, but not really peeing much.

If he doesn't start peeing I would go in. Sometimes my DD would say she didn't have to but when I ran the water in the bathroom we could always catch some to do a ketone test
