Sorry if this has been covered in the Facebook group. I never joined and now wish I did. Feel like I am missing out.
Does anyone's LO have reflux? Mine has been on medicine for a month. Last night he ate and over two hours later he spit up twice. He is on formula and it was a way lighter colour than formula since it had been so long since he ate. Then I fed him an hour later. 2 hours after that he was sleeping in his bassinet and I happened to be looking at him and his eyes popped open in panic he had a small cough and some spit up came out but he couldn't breathe and his face was getting red. He was choking on spit up. I picked him up and patted his back and he started to breathe in but not well and everytime he took a breath in he grabbed my shirt and his eyes got huge. It was the scariest thing ever. He has choked on spit up before but not to that extent. Just wondering if anyone else who has a baby with reflux has had them choke on it. Is there anything I can do so it doesn't happen again? Half the time he spits up he just swallows it back down instead of spitting it out. I feel bad for my little guy. You could see fear in his eyes last night. I never want to see that again.
I'm so sorry! It's so scary when they choke on their food. I truly hope it doesn't happen again, for all of your sakes!
The twins would choke on their food when in the NICU and for a few weeks after, but it was because they would forget to breathe while eating.
Tyler has reflux now and has been on meds for a few weeks. Have you thought about elevating his bed? I know you said he's in a bassinet, is he (or you) ready for him to be in a crib so you can lift the mattress on one end? That should help keep things down.
I hope you're able to find a solution! Maybe the ped can help or look at his meds to see if they need to be adjusted.
Both LO and DD have/had bad reflux. And both are or were on medicine. Has it been better in medicine until recently? Off so, my initial instinct is to think he needs a high dosage. Has he gained weight since the medicine was prescribed? When DD was on it, her dosage changed a few times because of weight gain.
G has also choked on his spit and it's scary. So major ((hugs)) there. He just started two day ago on medicine because his dr wanted to see if the lip tie cut helped the spitting up at all. His spitting up has been worse since he began. It's so frustrating.
No experience but hugs because that sounds terrifying. I've heard a lot of people recommend elevating one side of the bed, too. Or swings/RnP because LO isn't flat. Hope someone has better advice and you get this worked out!!

DS was a NICU baby too. Wonder if reflux is more common in preemies. His bassinet has a mattress and we do put a blanket rolled up where his head is under the mattress to elevate it. I also try not to put him down right after he eats but most of the time the spit up occurs at least an hour after he eats.
We do have a paediatrician appointment on Monday for his 4 month check so we will see what he says. He does not know about the reflux as it was our family doctor not the pedi who put him on the meds. Thanks for the advice.

I was wondering if maybe the dosage needed to be higher, however my neighbours son is on the same med and he weighs probably 4 pounds more and is only getting 0.1ml more than A. They did do a weight check 2 weeks after he started the meds and he had gained 4 or 5 ounces in those two weeks. We have an appointment Monday with the Pedi and next Friday with the family doctor so we will see what his weight is since it has been a month since his last weigh in.
Hope your little one has less spit up after being on the meds for a while.
That's so frightening. I'm sorry! Same suggestions re: elevated sleeping and potential higher dosage of meds. The episode you had last night sounds so much like my DS2 before we realized he had reflux. I never really thought it could be choking, but the eyes popping open, turning bright red, he would have formula shoot out of his nose and then he'd scream bloody murder. It was awful. I hope your pedi has some suggestions tomorrow so you don't have to face that again, and your poor LO doesn't either.
A did have it come out of his nose last night too. That has only happened about 4 times in total but I feel so bad for him. That is probably why he was struggling so much to breathe after I am sure there was still formula in his nose.
Also, have you tried a soy or sensitive- stomach formula? That might make a difference. I BF, but I noticed that my diet affected his reflux, so maybe changing the formula would also help.
F has silent reflux, but he's has choked on spit up, and it's terrifying. I'd suggest keeping him upright for half hour after feedings, and giving smaller feedings more frequently ( which sucks but it works)
Ah he did it again. He was on his kick and play piano just playing with the toys not really kicking. I was washing his bottles but could still see him. All of sudden he was kicking both feet with all his might and they were bashing on the floor. I ran over and he had spit up under his nose and I picked him up and he was struggling to breath in. He is going to give me a heart attack. It had been two hours since he ate. I feel bad for my little pickle
lepeters, I am sorry that your LO is experiencing this. We have been dealing with reflux since DD came home at the end of October. She is on two medications that were prescribed in the NICU. I agree with the advice of other to elevate the bed and to see if your mediciation dosage needs to be optimized as your son gains weight. DH elevated DD's crib by creating a wooden ramp to go under the mattress.
We have also asked our pediatrician to prescribe an electric suction machine to help with clearing out her mouth and nose when she has bad reflux episodes. It gets her calmer quicker than using other suction methods and it gives us much peace of mind. We have one at home and one at her child care provider. Insurance pays for the one at home, but the equipment provider mentioned that it is $17/month if your insurance does not cover it.
I'm here if you want to chat one on one. Extreme reflux can be a very scary thing. The doctors keep telling us that she will grow out of it, but in the meantime... you can't help but worry.
I have a practically full 1-pound canister of Alimentum... do you want it? If so, PM me your address. We tried it back when we thought DS was having some issues but we ended up not needing it. We made only a couple 4oz bottles from it. I hate to toss it, since it's so expensive!
Thanks for the offer I appreciate it. The paediatrician doesn't want us using powder with him. Not really sure the reasoning behind it. We use the ready made stuff. It is funny when you mention it being expensive. We live in Canada but are going to visit my parents who winter in California so we looked up alimentum in the states and it is more expensive that in Canada. Even though it is made in the states. So weird.

Thanks for the Advice. I have never used suction when this happens. I only have one really crummy nose suction thing so not sure it would help. Plus when this happens he thrashes around so much I doubt I could get the hand suction near his nose. I will research this electrical suction that you mentioned I have never heard of it. I am also thinking of getting the wedge to put under his sheet on his mattress that they sell at babies r us for when I move him over to his crib.

I think the electric suction is worth looking into if you have food coming up through the mouth and nose. Keeping her in place while she's moving around and we are trying to suction is tough, but doable.
So I have tried to feed him less more often and sometimes he is fine with the smaller amount but other times he is so angry. Does anyone have any experience trying to feed their LO less more often. His stomach is used to more so he is a bear when I don't give him as much formula.
Oh lepeters, I am so sorry you are going through this. DD has reflux and is on medication for it. She takes 0.6mL of Ranitidine (baby zantac) three times a day. The doctor also had us elevate her crib mattress. I put a pillow under the mattress (between the mattress and the springs) to keep it at an angle. I put my pregnancy wedge at the bottom of the mattress, under the sheet, to keep her from sliding down. Let me know if you want a photo of it. We also hold her upright at least 30mins after she eats. Also, if we need to lay her down, we will prop her up in the bobby pillow or the rock n play so she is at an angle. Since we started doing all of this, it seems like she spits up less. Good luck, there is nothing more terrifying than the sound of them choking!
Thanks MadMoe. We saw the pedi today and he said we can give him 1ml twice a day instead of 0.8ml. He also said that he recommends we keep him in our room in the bassinet since he has choked a few times. We have angled him in there so that is good. I was wondering about sliding when he is in the crib if I angle the matress. He was sliding in the bassinet on regular sheets so I put a fuzzy blanket down and he doesn't slide anymore. If you could share a picture that would be awesome.

lepeters our ped signed off on us using the Dex Daydreamer overnight. LO is rarely on her back but she has not had an episode like you are describing (she has silent reflux, it's just the acid that comes back up) so I'm not sure how well it would work for you. We also use the Snuza monitor (PGAL mama here, as long as she's wearing it I can sleep at night!). I imagine that might also give you some reassurance. We sleep with the Daydreamer between us on our king bed, also okayed by our ped.

I have never heard of the snuza monitor. I will look into it thanks. The daydreamer looks great for propping up. I appreciate the info thanks.
