Just ordered the sleep suit. We were doing pretty good—longer stretches of sleep, LO self soothing—and then the past two nights she did her first stretch for 4 hours and then was up every hour. I know it could be a lot worse but want to try to help her sleep even better if we can. Her startle reflex with her arms seems to be worse than ever...
Yep, it is designed to keep them from startling awake. DD was wiggling a lot in the swaddle and this has also helped with it. She's much calmer in this than the swaddle. No idea why, but it works!
We're in the frozen Midwest and currently use the fleece version. We keep the house temp around 68-70 and she's been comfortable. I also have a friend in Southern California that used the cotton version. Her DS had no issues with overheating.
I'm intrigued by the sleep suit. We swaddle at night but I don't want to do it during the day. Side note: She slept in her crib last night for the first time and she looks SO tiny in there.
Do you ladies think the startle reflex prevents our babies from sleeping longer periods?? If so, this suit may be good for my little lady too. She gets startled in her sleep pretty bad.
Got the suit and we're trying it tonight. H calls it her baby astronaut suit. If nothing else, she looks adorable and gave us a few minutes of entertainment while we giggled at how cute she is. Will let you know how it goes...
ETA she was totally still when we moved her from our bed to her crib. Normally she would flail a little when being laid down. Don't know if it's the suit or she's just exhausted but I'll take it.
I'm looking at the zippidy zip too. It was on shark tank and may help when our babes get just a little bigger. Safe to roll in! I ordered one because it won't hurt! It is a husband and wife, so I liked the idea of supporting small business. Sent a question via email and heard back in hours! They have a facebook page too. Excited to hear if magic suit works!
Third night with the Baby Merlin Magic Sleep Suit and so far we are having similar results as dsp2013—I'm thrilled! Last night LO's first stretch was 6 hours. She woke up every 2 hours after but was able to go right back to sleep after nursing. I actually think she didn't wake up as much in the first place—enough to let us know she was hungry but still in a sleepy state. No more waking herself up with flailing arms.
We are using the micro fleece version and she doesn't seem to be overheating at all. Just cozy. She definitely had to move to her crib—no way she fits in her bassinet with the suit.
It is a little more difficult to burp her just cause of the extra padding and if a MOTN diaper change is necessary, it's a bit of a drag. Last night we didn't need to change her til morning.
We've been doing a consistent night time routine for about 4 weeks. I think DD is finally starting to sense the routine and that has helped, too.
We've also started being a little more proactive in regard to naps. It was sort of a free for all before—some days DD would go all day and only sleep for 25 mins and other days she would nap a lot more. Anyway, started putting her down for a nap after she's been awake for about 90 minutes. Not on a specific schedule—just starting the 90 min count from whenever she happens to wake up. It seems to be the right window for her and she's been able to go down awake and put herself to sleep within a few minutes and limited fussing. More sleep during the day has helped her nighttime sleep.
Update: I ordered the magic Merlin on Amazon but decided to cancel right after because I wanted to see the options at Buy Buy Baby. I ended up purchasing The Miracle Blanket! And it was a miracle!! LO slept 11/6:30 in her bassinet!! That's never happened! All of her long stretches have been in her RNP! I included a pic for reference.
We were gifted with one of these Miracle Blankets. I was so intimidated by it! The SwaddleMe has worked for us so far, but we don't swaddle her arms. So it's just wrapped up to her arm pits.
gldnbearz we have the Swaddle Me as well, but I tried them early on and the Velcro was hard in the middle of the night. It's looking like my LO needs arms in or she wakes herself up or scratches herself. I may try the Swaddle Me again, when the Miracle Blanket is in the wash!
tacocat From what can tell from the reviews, the suit is stiff enough to resist baby's startled jerks and random movements that might wake her up.
This ^^ Though I will say it's not quite as restrictive as I thought it would be. I imagined it being heavier than it is—it's super puffy but light. Which I was glad about. I didn't want LO to feel too oppressed
ETA before LO started fighting having her arms wrapped, we really liked the Miracle Blanket, too. Definitely holding on to that for future LO #2.
@heather555 I have tried once. It is too big for her but she once did wake up and self soothed with her hand which she has never done! Since she is in the 13th percentile and still has the startle reflex, if didn't stop that. When she gets bigger i think it will work great....I hope
