I like it because of the meaning behind it so if it's something you feel strongly about it I think you should use it and not care what anyone else thinks.
There are lots of names that mean Bear that are better than, well, Bear. Do you know what the word is in the language of the tribe from which your friend was descended? Also, Augustus is not good. Alexander is much, much better. Annabelle Sarah has nothing on Sylvia Marie.

I don't feel like using a name like Arthur really relays the sentiment I am after. It's Bear or nothing in this case. Bear really suited his personality and Arthur does not. Thanks for the suggestions so far!
bromios I don't know the word from his tribe but I'll ask his mom next time I see her. Great idea. Also, Augustus was my grandfather's name.
I think Alexander Isaiah sounds fine. But if you feel like Bear is the better choice in the mn spot I would go for it. I prefer Alexander to Augustus by so, so much.
I really like Bear. I love August but I just don't love Augustus as much. Augustus Bear is cool IMO. I know a guy with the MN Wolf and everyone thinks it's pretty cool, sort of like a fun icebreaker when someone wonders what the "W" stands for. Sylvia > Annabelle

I would go for Bear for a MN - it's an awesome way to honor someone you obviously cared about a lot, and honestly it's not often in your life that people ever ask/know your MN anyway so I don't see it being a problem for your LO.
Like PP I prefer Isaiah, but at least you have a strong reason for using Bear and are not just trying to be unique. Your other baby names are pretty good overall.

If anyone is going to promote hippie-ish animal names, it would be me, but I can't get behind Bear. I think it would be an adorable nickname for a little boy, but I can't see using it legally. I'm southern, so all I can think about is Paul "Bear" Bryant.
*Eta names that mean bear in some way:
Possibly Arthur? (Meaning is not exactly known, but Artos is Celtic for Bear. I also found the name Arto is Finnish for Arthur and I'm kind of digging it.) Bernard (essentially means "brave bear") Orson (English surname meaning bear cub) Otso (another Finnish name that means bear) Dov (Hebrew for bear) Berengar (German) Beowulf (means Bee Wolf, but BTN says it's "in effect equal to bear," and lets face it; it's a kickass name.)

It will be your child, you should name him or her what you want. The chef Jamie Oliver named one of his kids Buddy Bear, so it's not entirely uncommon.
