When he latches for the first time on a breast (like I'm rotating 1 boob per feeding), it feels like a razor blade cutting off my nip, but that's gone within 2-3 seconds and I have no pain throughout feeding. Is this a painful letdown? I don't know if I feel a letdown.
I only felt letdown when I pumped last time but when it happened it was pretty painful. I would guess it could maybe be that.

I had a similar experience with LO starting out. Even with the LC watching saying everything looked fine, I still had pain upon initial latching. It eventually went away, so I didn't think too much of it. It came back when nursing while pregnant, so I think it's a hormonal thing?

Nope. That's just your nipples getting mauled. It should get easier after their mouth is bigger (deeper latch fixes razor nips). Letdown is usually in your chest/boob. Not the nips.

Yeah he gets a little aggressive while latching. It's cute though to see him all rooting around like that.
DD has a small mouth, which makes it hard to get a good latch. She ruined my nipples in the first few days. I got a nipple shield and used it for about a day and a half to let my nips heal a little, and things are SO MUCH BETTER now. She still sometimes rejects the boob without the shield though, so we have to work on that.
Same here. I hate the shield because it's an extra step, but he tears my nips up without it. I hope his mouth gets bigger soon, or else I might switch to EPing, since I'm already pumping 8-10 times per day anyway.

This.
I also have a bit more pain than expected when Julian latches that is focused on the nipples. His sister did much better from the beginning. I think Julian is getting better at it tho, and it is juuust beginning to hurt less with each feed.

Julian is about 3 days old and already cluster feeding! Anyone else?
I am happy tho because the more he eats, the more he will poop, and the less likely he will need to do phototherapy for jaundice (which has been creeping on him).

DD was cluster feeding yesterday at 8 days. I thought that was soon. It's exhausting, but DD went back to her normal schedule today. Hopefully tomorrow will go back to normal for you.
The cramping during nursing...how long does that last? I don't remember having that with DS.
Dude, the nursing cramps with subsequent babies hurts like a bitch, huh? I was SHOCKED after DD2 was born how bad it hurt, like breathing through contractions hurt. I feel like it got better every day pp.

I feel like latch pain/nursing pain just varies among women. "They" say if it hurts something's wrong but that hasn't been my experience after nursing two.
With DD1 it HURT for like 2 months. LCs would tell me everything looked good but it still hurt. With DD2 nip pain got way better around 2-3weeks. I'm hoping the same pattern follows for this one!

It gets worse with each baby according to my OB (and my experience). This time around (third kid) I'd say it lasted about 5 days? DD is 8 days old now and I haven't felt any cramping in a few days.

I didn't have any with DS and so this totally took my by surprise! Totally like contractions. I can feel my ute get all balled up too. But that means they're working so, no answer from me, just camaraderie.

At Jule's newborn appt today the pedi confirmed that he has a tongue tie. The thing (forget the name) goes all the way to the tip of his tongue. She was disappointed that the hospital we left yesterday did not diagnose it because apparently they love to do that. It would have saved us a trip back on monday to the ENT just to get it snipped.
It explains the painful nursing, plus his weight loss, plus his lack of good pee and poop diapers. Bad latch = poor milk transfer.
But, she also gave me a nipple shield, and showed us how to feed him with a syringe to supplement my nursing. He has pooped liked crazy today and actually seems satisfied with each feeding. I am pumping, nursing, and we give him a tad extra of formula. Grow baby grow!
So now that Sean is home from the nicu we're trying to bf. We never really did in the nicu we just nuzzled bc every time I visited I needed to pump and if he didn't really take anything I'd have to put him down right away to go sit in the pumping room.
My nips are relatively small, he seems to latch on well when we time it right (hungry but not ravenous), he'll give 2-3 strong sucks and then just sit for a moment, content, with it in his mouth. Then he moves his head and my nipple is like completely flat (flush to the areola) and he won't/can't latch again. Any suggestions?

Are you keeping your hand on and holding the c- shape or do you let go? It may help keep him on if you hold that shape for a while.

I don't have any advice, but wanted to say YAY and congrats on him being home! FX Liam follows soon!

Hmm, I think it happens either way, but I'll try holding it longer and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion!

U may also be a good candidate for a nippleshield because of ur flat nipples. It will give baby something to latch on to. Try one out?

Alexis has this same thing. It's called a frenulum and goes to the tip of her tongue also. The LC said to wait and see if I will need to get it fixed. I will ask the pedi today at her spot. I've been supplementing with formula. That's also because my nipples hurt so bad during feedings that I can only handle so much
I am two weeks PP and curious if anyone knows how much milk I should be getting? I'm exclusively pumping because C is still not strong enough to latch, and am getting anywhere between 1 1/2 to 4 oz at a time(3 hours to 5 hrs). She eats about 1 1/2 to 2 oz every time and I'm keeping up with her but just assumed I would be able to get a little ahead and it hasn't happened yet.
I'm an exclusive pumper too and I write this to you as I sit here and pump. I started taking 2 tablets 3x a day of Fenugreek when I got home from the hospital. J is now 6 months and I only take it twice a day when I remember. When I was on maternity leave, I pumped every 3 hours and built up a stash because the fenugreek increased my supply significantly. You'll get there. Just keep pumping and relax. Drink lots of water too. I tried reading what I should be making too when mine was new but you won't find it easily. For me on the vitamins, I average 50oz a day but it might not be the same for you. However, it's worth a shot if you want to try.

We got his frenulum snipped today. We waited like an hour after our scheduled appt for the doctor, but the whole procedure took 5 seconds and he barely cried. I nursed him right after and it still hurt a bit but i think he just needs to relearn how to latch. The most recent nursing session was better already. It is also amazing to see how well he can move his tongue now.

Has anyone ever been able to use a nipple shield for just a few feeds to get through recovery and then switch back? My left nipple hurts SO much. It kind of looks like it's blistering. I think his latch is too shallow, so I want to try to fix it, but the pain is so excruciating that the thought of it makes me want to cry... but I don't want to trade one problem for another if the nipple shield is just going to cause more problems tomorrow.

Not sure if this will help or not --- I had to fix baby's latch each time for several days. I had to pull his chin down and make sure both lips were flanged out. The pain would reduce and eventually he learned it himself. I also got these cooling gel pads for nipples that helped a lot. Motherlove nipple cream has helped me more than Lanolin, also.
ETA: to get him on proper, squeeze your breast in the direction so that it makes it like he's eating a hamburger. If he's latching from a cradle/cross cradle, with body turned towards you, you'd be grabbing on each side of your breast, as opposed to top and bottom.

Anyone else have babies that eat every hour? He's been nursing Q 1-2 hours since yesterday morning, aside from a couple of times that he went 3 hrs. At one point today, he nursed for almost 1 ½ hrs straight. Exhausting.

Both of my best friends have used nipple shields with their kids for different reasons (bad latch and recovery, and flat/inverted nipples). They both weaned off the shields successfully and had great breastfeeding relationships. My friend who used it for a bad latch (and to recover from some serious nipple damage) used it for a couple weeks and had literally no issues after, and nursed for almost 2 years. If pain is making you not want to nurse, I would give it a shot. Also because it's hard for your body to let down when you're in so much pain, which can cause engorgement or supply issues. Sorry you're hurting!!

rivers and roads IME, the nipple shield is so totally worth it! I used it for 3 months with my firstborn and successfully weaned off and BFed for a year. I'm now using it 70% of the time with DS2 and he can switch back and forth no problem. Blistering nips are no joke; so painful.
