Also I would recommend getting a car adapter for your pump so that you can pump in the car when you're out.
Yessss car adapter changed everything! I would pump on my commute to and from work. Just make sure you bring a cover to avoid stares.
I was pumping in my car in the parking lot during school break yesterday kind of in a sketchy area and all I could think about was the cops coming because someone reported me for indecent exposure. Definitely not my first time doing it so i don't know why I was so paranoid that time.
It's been slow going for my milk supply (EP) but it's finally starting to increase with each session. I went from only getting 15 mL total the last few days, to about an ounce last night, and now just got 1.5 ounces (covering about half of baby's feedings). Hopefully we can get to full on milk in the next day or two, limit the need for formula supplements. Who knew secreting liquid from my tits could be so exciting? Ha.
Also, I thought the biggest milk time was the wee hours of the morning. I seem to get the most mid-day. Weird.

Pumping is tough, hang in there. I never would have made it had I EP with DS. My body just isn't a great pumper. And it's slow going to start. Keep at it! I applaud you because I think it would be even harder to do than just nursing. It's a lot of work!
I tried to put C on the boob again today and she actually got a good latch without the shield for a while but holy hell, it was a different sensation than it has been before! I saw another article where a woman's milk was totally different colors after she breastfed normally and when her baby had a cold so I was hoping my boobs would suction in her saliva and then adjust to get this kid healthy! Fingers crossed!

Help...so much pain in my right boob. It just came out of nowhere this morning. No noticeable damage to the nipple. I talked to my OBs office- and they think Mastisis. (I have a slight fever). I'm not convinced as I don't have any lumps. Maybe thrush? How do I tell the difference? I can't nurse at all on that side right now. I'm going to the LC later today and I'm hoping they can tell me what is going on. I guess one baby will get pumped milk all day. I was in tears for 30 mins after my last feeding. Ibuprofen seemed to have helped the pain some.
Try ice? Hand expressing might help some? No answers, but I hope you feel better.

Red tender boob (may have small lump if you have the courage to massage/breast exam yourself - caution: painful) Lump = blocked duct. Needs aggressive massage and baby sucking try offering that side 2x for every turn on the other. Mastitis will make you feel like you have the flu. Groggy, fever, chills, boob pain, nausea, etc. get the script just in case.
Don't skip the feedings unless you absolutely can't stand it. But if it's a clogged duct you want to massage while baby nurses. Preferably with their chin pointing towards the lump.
Eta - mastitis doesn't have lumps (usually). That's an infection. :/ your milk is fine though.
I'm rating that, and the pain caused from the damage during it, right up there with labor.
yes and yes. Realtalk: Engorgement and trying to poop big painful poops both make me go all wild-eyed like an animal caught in a trap. With DD2 my milk came in less than 48hrs after baby was born, I could feel the engorge coming on in the hospital and it freaked me out. I asked for ice diapers for my boobs and spoke to 2 different LCs about it. No fun.
For those who do the side lie position how do you do it? I remember trying with dd and finding it really uncomfortable. I have a large chest and I think I would nurse on the bottom and then the top would lay and I'd have to arch back which hurt my back
I haven't tried it yet this time but it would make motn easier (I can only do football which means coming out to the living room each time).
Do you feed baby from the boob on top or bottom? Do you have baby up on a pillow to make them higher etc...?

I need logistics here!
I've done side lying feeding from the bottom boob, no pillow for DS, he either turns his head or I put him on his side. I'm somewhere around a 36 DD at the moment, maybe a little bigger cup size.

I did it with DD last time but I waited until she was a little bit older, like probably 3 months or so. I have real big boobs, like 32J probably when my milk comes in, so I was real paranoid about suffocating her when she was tiny. The way I did it is she would lay on her side, nurse from the bottom boob and I would kind of lean back. You could put a pillow behind your back and it might feel better for you.
Those who have had mastitis (either this baby or previously) did your supply drop a lot on that side? I'm getting about 1/3 of what I get on the other side )and they are pretty even). I was keeping up feeding the twins, now in short every time I pump and for the first time today, they didn't seem satisfied after I nursed. Is the low supply temporary?

Should I be worrying about over supply issues this soon or will it self regulate? I'm still having some engorgement issues and even if I pump off some to relieve pressure, DS is literally drowning at the breast.

Oh, definitely the bottom boob! To get the other one we flip sides. My boobs are pretty big and soft so the nipple is level with baby's mouth when he is also on his side and lying directly on the bed.
I lay my bottom arm straight out in front of me above his head and that prevents me from rolling on top of him if i doze off. My other arm is draped over him and i use a blanket at his back to keep him on his side.

It will regulate. Give it 3-4 weeks before you start worrying too much.

This.
And be very careful pumping! I've heard that hand expressing into a towel is the best way to go so you're not accidentally triggering further milk production.

+1 to exactly this.
+2
I did side-lying all the time with my daughter. Henry hasn't figured it out yet. I think it requires some neck/head control from the baby that some newborns don't have right away.

I noticed a huge knot about 2" wide, above my nipple. I'm assuming plugged duct. He was due to eat on the other side so I pumped the plugged side (I'm almost 4 weeks PP and want to start pumping once per day to have an emergency stash). It got a little better but was still there. Now I'm on round 2 of him nursing on that side (now and a couple of hours ago). So that's 3x removing milk from that breast and the knot is still there (gets small then big again). It hurts to massage it but is doable. Any other tips? It's above the nipple, so hard to get his chin facing that way (upside down breastfeeding?). And how long before I start panicking about getting mastitis?

Heat, take a warm shower, bath, heating pad, etc and massage. Keep nursing!
