We just had LOs tip tie revised at the beginning of January. We did it because nursing became excruciating when her teeth came in, and we were told it could cause tooth decay etc. Lo had a stage 3/5 tie. She also has a tongue tie, but it's a stage two and so far isn't affecting anything. We chose to not get that done unless it shows issues as she gets older (lisps etc).
We went through a dentist our lc recommended and it was $300 bucks to do.
Hey - I didn't have DS1 revised until I noticed DS2's ties.
DS1 was 23m when he was revised, and we've noticed a change in his teeth already (9m ago). His was pretty severe with the lip connected to upper palate. Also, about 99% of lip ties are accompanied by posterior tongue ties.
caer we chose to go with the dentist because he did laser without sedation.
The dentist will take dental or medical insurance. His office will bill for either.
Another reason we chose to correct these is that my boys both have high palates. I'd read that correcting the ties can help the palate to lower.
I'm also a speech pathologist so I wanted to be proactive about possible speech issues.
I am glad this thread came up because I was getting worried about the gap in Jason's teeth. I had never heard of lip tie and I just checked his mouth. He has it. :-( Thankfully it doesn't sound too serious and it is fixable. I guess we will be bringing this up at our 1 year appointment.
FWIW all people have a frenulum on their upper lip so if anyone flips up their upper lip/tongue they'll see attachment. It's the degree to which it causes restriction in movement that can make it "tied" and need correction.

Completely understood. :-) Jason's comes all the way down between his teeth. Not knowing much, that seems a bit extreme. I will have to wait for the pedi and dentist to check it out to confirm, but this could explain one of the reasons why we couldn't breastfeed despite our best efforts.
