We have my classroom library that I bought while teaching first grade. I don't let them look at paper books alone usually, but considering most are from yard sales, I won't be too sad if a few don't survive. My kids aren't any worse than the first graders were.
Every time I see one of you teachers post on here about buying supplies for your classroom my mind is completely blown. Stocking your classroom with supplies and books should not be coming out of your own pocket. That would never fly around here.
I've got 2 class libraries in my basent - first and fourth. I think that's exactly why I am more relaxed about them. I've seen the worst already from kids who should know better.
Daffy, if I didn't buy supplies and books, my classes would have had 20 pencils for 24 kids, 100 pages of filler paper, and some beat up books from the 70s.
DD has had free range over all of her books since the very beginning. She has only started to be rough with the books over the past month. One library book page got ripped and then some of her personal books have also gotten torn. I've started removing the delicate library books from her room overnight so we wont damage anymore of them. Otherwise I guess I figure it comes with the territory.
cricket it's not that I don't believe that you guys need to do that to have decent resources for your class. I just mean that it is unacceptable (in my opinion) that those things aren't provided. My mom has been a teacher/principal for 36 years and I know for a fact she has never bought that kind of supplies for her classrooms, at least not out of pocket. I've been with her plenty of times when she has purchased new resources or materials for the classroom, but it was always something that was reimbursed when she submitted her receipts to the school. She sometimes buys little "extras" or special treats for the students herself, but never legitimate class materials. I just find it shocking that those things aren't funded.

This exactly! The last year I taught, I received $250 for supplies for the entire year. It drives my DH crazy how little they provided.
I feel so bad that some of you guys are out of pocket for your classrooms. We noticed a couple of years ago that my son's then-teacher was reluctant to ask for money for supplies, so for the past couple of years, a few of us parents have pitched in money and given the teacher a $200 or more Staples gift card at the beginning of each school year, and asked to be told if the card ran out so we could refill it. That way the teacher can get what they need without having to ask each time they ran out of something. They do send in a supply list at the beginning of the year, and most of us parents over-stock. I hope trends like that catch on.
