I just want to know what is safe. Where can I put my baby where nothing bad will happen to him? I mean if he's not safe strapped into his car seat going .5 miles per hour then where can I put him?
I'm not trying to sound sarcastic, I just don't really understand.
In the warmer weather I wore him in a carrier but at -30 below and blizzards, nope nope nope. I try not to bring him but occasionally no choice. Try to be as safe as possible but even in a carrier, I could get hit by a car so basically nothing is safe

becole - what ksyknelvr73 said 1st one not safe, 2nd much safer. Please don't put on the top of the cart in a car seat. Very unsafe & dangerous. The seat is not secure there & it can tip. Also throws off the balance of the cart, making it very easy to tip over. It's ok to put them on the top on their own ( no car seat). But you still have to keep close watch. I might say something in a store with the car seat on top. That just freaks me out.
I wear DD. I slipped and fell last time we were in the store. So?
Or the sling parts could break... Putting the car seat in the part where the groceries go would basically be unsafe too because then groceries can fall on them.
I tell my mother, it's amazing I survived without all of the safety features we have now (joking). I just try to make my best decision I can. I wonder what we are all doing now that will be horrifying to someone else in 5-10 years.

I mean, if it's a published thing and has been issued as a safety standard, I'm going to do it. If I'm not sure, maybe I will and maybe I won't. But if I have heard not to put the car seat on the top, then I won't. Simple as that.
I think we can all spiral down the ways our kids could get hurt even if we follow all the right instructions and safety standards, but that's not the point. You cannot protect your kid from every single thing ever. But if you know it's not recommended, for safety, why not just adhere to it?

I don't understand saying "I can't wear baby anymore" I'm short (5'4) and DS is like 24ish pounds and I wear him all the time. I wore DS1 on my back past 30 pounds. Not judging, just confused.
If i don't wear him to the store, I'd rather put him in the seat of the cart with a cover on it since he mouths errrything. No suggestions for the bucket seat since I haven't used it in months, but I guess the safest is to put it in the big part of the cart.

My back gave out a month after giving birth (couldn't get off the ground), so it's hard to hold him long with that. But he also seems to be very uncomfortable and kicks me and whines the whole time. And it's like his legs are at my thighs. Our backpack carrier is huge. I haven't tried taking that to a store. Maybe I don't have a good carrier. I have a k'tan, infantino, and a Kelty.

Sorry about your back, I didn't think about that kind of thing. We have an Ergo and DS is very content in it, front and back carry. He's kinda just chill in general though.
I have heard people say they don't have pain with the ergo so maybe I should shell out the money for it since I plan to have more kids. Which ergo do you have?
If I have to hold him a while my back will spasm. I think my height and his weight make it worse. I'm not sure if a certain carrier will help with that. If my husband goes, he could hold him but if I'm stuck on my own, I usually want to push him in the cart.

It's just the regular Ergo. I found mine at TJMaxx for half price in a discontinued color!
My LO is so heavy that it hurts my arms and back to carry/hold him for long, but the Ergo distributes the weight mostly on my shoulders and takes a lot of the pressure off.
I myself would not say anything because I don't like confrontation. But if I personally knew the person then I probably would. As for a May mom doing something unsafe I again wouldn't say anything because I feel that we are all generally internet savvy and had access to the former bump which had a lot of information on safety precautions and such. I also know there would be plenty of others here that would feel more comfortable than I would that would say something first.

I have sciatica issues since before pregnancy and the carrier we have distributes a lot of the weight to the hips to help minimize the weight pushing down on your shoulders through your back. It's also about 1/2 the price of some of the other carriers. It also has the proper hip placement to prevent hip dysplasia.
I think if you aren't getting a lot of groceries, inside the cart (#2) is ok to do. I've done it a few times.
Usually, though, either DS will stay at home with DH or we all go together so DH can help with DS and picking up the heavy stuff.
I probably wouldn't say anything but that's because I'm kind of shy. However, if I did have balls I would say something like "I used to do that until someone told me it was unsafe. I just wanted to let you know in case you were unaware like me!" That way, it looks less like attacking their parental skills.

I wouldn't say anything to a stranger because I feel like the vast majority of people would react along the lines of "who are you and why are you judging me?" There was a blog I saw not too long ago 'why didn't anyone tell me?', after a tragedy happened. I saw that and thought about all the other 'shut up and leave me alone, you judgey so-and-so' blogs.

aimeefarrahfowler it totally depends on what carrier you have. With DD1 I started out with a BabyBjorn Miracle. It has a back brace but is a crotch dangler. By 7months old I couldn't wear her in it anymore. Her legs were dangling in my knees and tripping me. She was super heavy and my shoulders were killing me, despite the back support. I switched to an Action Baby Toddler carrier and now I can carry DD1 in it no problem. She's 2yo, over 30lbs and I'm 5'4". I wear DD2 in it 2hours every morning.

I have a horrible back, multiple herniated discs but no problem wearing ds w/ the beco. The problem is that this kid basically tries to strangle me now so wearing him is reserved only for grocery store trips when dh isn't around. I was thinking of taking him to the zoo or a museum this week and I am considering just straight up carrying him in my arms because he's less crazy than in the beco
What do you guys think of this? I put in my zip code and it pulled up a lot of stores here that supposedly have their carts equipped with these, but I've never seen them.
These are just as dangerous as putting the car seat on the seat portion of the cart. It still makes the shopping cart top heavy, which can lead it to tip over. The other reason is that car seats aren't a "one size fits all" with regards to the way that the locking mechanisms work. Each bran is set up a little bit differently, and you could damage it by using one of these.
I put DD's car seat in the basket part of the shopping cart. I'f i'm going to be buying more stuff than will fit in the cart around her carseat, I will grab a couple of baskets and put them on the bottom of the cart under the main basket. You could also ask an employee at your store if there is someone available to help you by pushing a second shopping cart.
This is why I don't put a car seat on top of the seat portion of the cart. Regardless of the risk (what is the risk?), I still see babies perched hazardously on carts.
Then again, when I fell, I was holding DS2. So how safe exactly are my arms?

OK, I'm the bad mom here. I have definitely put baby girl in her car seat on top of the child seat in the shopping cart. No one said anything to me, and I held on to her the entire time. I can't do my weekly grocery shopping with her car seat taking up the entire cart area, and carrying her all the time didn't work well either. For small trips I just bring her stroller and throw things in the basket under her or carry a separate basket.
Now that she's big enough, I use a shopping cart cover so that I can put her in the kids' seat. She loves it. The worse part is getting her from the car to the store and back in the cold weather because her legs and feet dangle. I usually turn her sideways so her feet are in the seat and wrap her up in a blanket.

And in what situation are carts tipping over--towards the handles or side to side? If you're tipping side to side then you're going way too fast. Towards the handle...I tested out my store's shopping carts and that was difficult to do with the large carts.
ETA: Eh...and I'm not fighting you guys, just admitting that I've done it, while thinking about it a lot. And truthfully, I've only done it 3 times? I didn't like doing it, but I did it.

Ive done it and I hold on to the seat while I do it. I know there is some risk to it but sometimes it is all I can do and I am aware of the potential hazard so I hold on. I have never seen a cart tip or fall over. Even the seats with a seat built into it, never seen one or heard of one tipping over. Before children, if I loaded the top of my cart so it was "top heavy" and still never tipped or felt tippy in anyway. Anyhow, even with all the info out there, I still feel confident in my choice on the days I have to bring DS in the cart with his seat. I don't care about judgey moms out there or people who disagree with me. They have their opinion and I have mine. I am not doing it oblivious to the risk. It is a choice I/some make and some chose not to.
jerssey, flockofmoosen - sames I've had to do it, and made the safest choice I felt I could make (like you jerssey in the top part of a Loblaws cart with me being uber conscious of her seat).
I feel strongly about mind your own business when it comes to strangers conducting themselves in slightly unsafe ways you know better about...I would be really annoyed if a drivers ed instructor tried to stop me in a parking lot because they noticed some things about my driving I just might not be aware I was doing...
I think most parents are trying to do what's best for their child "always" and no one reacts well to strangers telling them they're doing something wrong.
If it was a friend, I would find a way to say what's need to be said, a stranger, no way.
Unless a child was tipping over while I walked by, at which point I'd throw myself at a cart to try to protect the kiddo.
