STMs - Transition from Crib to Bed?

I've heard different things.. some keep their kids in a crib as long as they can fit and others move them out as soon as they start to climb things. 

What's everyone's experiences??

We transitioned DD at 23 months. Our motivation was that she asked for/demanded a big girl bed, and since we wanted her crib for DS, we jumped on the opportunity. It was a super easy transition, so I'm not going to be much help as far as troubleshooting, but we do a lot of things child-led and it tends to make it easy on us, even if it's sometimes less convenient waiting for her to initiate.

That was our hope but clearly my kid had a different plan. Damn kids.

It's also been a year, so maybe my memory is a little cloudy?  I do recall being totally creeped out whenever I would hear her little footsteps even though I knew it was just her getting out of bed.

I intended to keep DD1 in the crib as long as possible. But at 18m she started fighting sleep like crazy (right after DD2 arrived, I think she was trying to get more attention) and she climbed out of it and crashed. We converted it to a toddler bed that night. I was not ready for that at all! But it worked out ok in the end. We had a rough 3months. DH or I had to sit with her for 2 hours every night until she fell asleep. I had to take her in my bed for naps and pin her down until she fell asleep because she was fighting naps like crazy. Since about 22m she's been a great sleeper/mapper again. She goes down on her own again. I think all of the mess was due to the arrival of the baby, not the switch to the toddler bed.

DS1 never tried to climb out of the crib. So we didn't convert it into a toddler bed until he was 2 years and 9 months old. He never had the first bit of trouble adjusting. We switched him to a regular single bed 3 months after his 3rd birthday so we could reassemble the crib and move it into the nursery.

Eh...with DD she was easy with transitions. We took a side off her crib to make it a daybed around maybe 18 months-2years. She did great. Plus we knew a new baby would be in the works soon so he neded the crib . I think it depends on the kid though.
But overall anymore I just think that all these things will happen and be done before you know it no matter when you do it! It's all a phase and they go by so quickly! So I'd say go with what you want - it'll be fine!
Edit - oh, and you can always undo the whole bed thing and try again later if It doesn't work how you want it to at first.

Thanks everyone I know it's all so variable but it's super helpful to hear what other experiences have been like. Currently this kid just like.. rolls in circles while sleeping, so I know he's nowhere near ready for a bed but with him trying to climb onto everything now, I'm starting to think about it a little more.

That's the thing I was worried about when we switched DD1 to the toddler bed. She rolls like crazy when she sleeps. Ends up in all sorts of crazy positions in all corners of her bed. But since she's been in the toddler bed she actually started moving less around. She only fell out once, so not bad!

My almost 3 yo is still in the crib. He hasn't climbed out yet so what's the deal. Besides, if I put him in a big boy bed, he'd be up all night long.

No. I'm getting a bed for him this birthday, seeing it up, and practicing with it (nap times etc).
