My LO got diagnosed with a double ear infection and a sinus infection. He took his first three doses of antibiotics wonderfully! Today he spiked a temp of 102 and looked miserable (no rash so I don't think it's related to the antibiotics) so I gave him Ibuprofen- berry flavored, talked to the on call doc just in case and tried to give him his 4th dose of abx. He refused! I *think* because he had the berry and was expecting that? I mixed in in his milk and he spit that all out too. He's on augmentin (so it has that amoxicillin "flavor"). Before I try any of the add in flavors I will try tomorrow to mix it in oatmeal or applesauce.
My question is if that fails what syrup flavor should I ask the pharmacy to mix in it? I feel like it has such a strong flavor to begin with I don't know how to mask it! I was thinking chocolate or berry.
Also, any other tips or tricks you have to get LO to take antibiotics? He is supposed to take it twice and day for 10 days!!
D had a medicine she refused to take once, and my pediatrician (I shit you not) told me to spike each dose with a couple drops of chocolate syrup....like Hershey's. Give that a shot. Augmentin is the devil.
This is a new trick I've recently discovered. The chocolate syrup has a really strong flavor so it helps mask the awfulness of antibiotics. Try this.
If that doesn't work it's freaking hard to get them to take it. We distract C (with tv usually) and almost sneak it into her when she's zoned out. Just do a little bit at a time.
Or straddle him on the floor and while he's screaming shoot it as far back into his mouth as possible so he HAS to swallow it. That's less lovey, but it does the job. Follow it up with some snuggles to avoid PTSD (lol!)
