Wow, Hazel has skyrocketed! It was #893 in 2000, and has now hit #62. That's crazy. Georgia has become steadily more popular too, but not at that rate thankfully.

Well, if anyone is surprised by the top ten, they obviously don't know any kids. I do find a lot of new parents are delusional about name popularity. I have a friend who chose Ava because she wanted "something different." The weird thing is she's a teacher. Of children. And then she was shocked to learn it was crazy common.
I have nothing against popular names but I do pick things that are not in the top 100 because after I hear a name a bunch, it loses something for me. My daughter's name is around 300 and this baby's name is around 400. But lots of awesome classic names are really popular and another girl might have been Katherine anyway because my mom is more important to me than the popularity of the name.
And she is in the top 10... I'm ok with it since I am in love with the name we have picked out. My name was #1 in 1983 - my birth year so I grew up with so many of them. Annoying at times but not the end of the world.

DD is the number 1 name from the year she was born. We knew it when we picked it but didn't care. It's the perfect name for her. FWIW she's never had another kid with the same name in her class at daycare/school.
When we visited my ILs over spring break we went to music class with my nephew. There was an 18 month old there named Khaleesi. I had to roll my eyes at SIL.

Seriously! My mom has been a teacher for almost 30 years now. Olivia was one of the girl names that I really loved but always said I wouldn't be able to use because it's SO POPULAR. And every time I mentioned that my mom would go "well I've never had an Olivia before so I don't know why you think that." I'd always tell her give it 4-5 years and you will!
And I'm the same as you with names. Our two big rules for names were that they couldn't be in the top 10 (farther out of the list the better) and couldn't be a weird name because there are way too many out there nowadays.

DD1's name jumped 111 spots from the year she was born (2011). Crazy.
With this one's names in the running, one has jumped 9 spots, one jumped 19 spots, one jumped 59 spots, one fell 2 spots, and one still hasn't cracked the top 1,000....all in the past year.
I also would not be able to keep a straight face if I met a Khaleesi. But then, I cannot keep a straight face with the name Elsa either, and that one jumped 241 spots IN ONE YEAR (2013 to 2014), only to fall this year by 201 spots.
None of our names are on the top ten list. TBH, it wouldn't be a deal breaker if it was. I'm not bothered by popularity of names. Unless I knew multiple kids with a name I loved, I would still use it.

Blah Maddox is 146, I thought it would have been in the 400s. Oh well. I still love the name and it's not in the top 100 so I'm happy.
I have a very popular 80s name and there were five of us with the same name in high school and always wanted a more unique, unpopular name so we tried to stay out of the top 100 with all our potential names.
I'm attracted to less common, but not made up, names, so no names on the top 10 ever have been in my consideration. At this point though, I don't like ANYTHING, lol. I have a huge baby name book and just nothing stands out to me. This baby is never getting a name, I guess.

We had the same issue! There were two boy names that we really loved but none of the ones on our girls list really jumped out at us and made us think "that's the one!" You could always have a few that you like and take them to the hospital, and maybe when you see him for the first time one will jump out at you.

Ha I was the opposite. I have a girl name that I'm set on and have loved since I was like, 16. But boy names are impossible so of course I am having a boy! I definitely plan on having a few choices and seeing what I think once he's born. I just need to come up with those names now! Lol.
So H and I were unaware that Amelia has become so popular until a couple weeks ago. I love the name so much but we've been researching new ones because DS has a very popular name and it drives me crazy! I don't know if we'll find a different one but it's another thing I've been worrying about. I think it was #12 on there, ugh.
DD's name was #1 2014 and 2015. I don't really care. We were oblivious to the fact it was so popular. I think it depends on the area as well. Where we live it isn't extremely common. I tend to stray from names I personally hear all the time. That being said, the names we like for LO2 aren't near the top. I'm hoping one pops out at me soon as "the name."

Amelia seems to be crazy-popular in my area (or maybe just my circle of friends?). I know a 4 year old, two 2 year olds, a one year old, and a 6 month old.
That being said, just because it is popular on the SSA list, doesn't mean that it is popular in your area. Try searching by state and see if it is big in your state.
It's so interesting to me to see the difference in names depending on location. Growing up in Oregon one year there were 3 of us girls with the same name in one class. In the 7 years of living in New England I never came across another person with my same name!

It is VERY popular and we know a lot of little Amelias. I think it's a very pretty name but if popularity bothers you, it might be a bit too high in the rankings for your comfort.

It is very interesting and location has a lot to do with it. My suburb is middle class to upper middle class with many older first time parents and names tend toward classic, older, or hipster light.
Somehow here are two Kevins in my daughter's preschool grade of about 50 kids. I think they both might be juniors. I think its the most random coincidence. I know three little Clementines under five and even more Islas. Our story time class of 12 kids had 4 Henrys one session. Yet there are top 20 names where I don't know any kids with them.

I am somewhat disappointed that Silas is becoming more popular. It was #129 last year and I think it may be even more popular this year. I still love the name but I really hope it doesn't get into the top 100.
DS1's name isn't even in the top 1000 and I don't think it will ever be. It's not even a crazy unique name, just really uncommon.

That was a good idea to look, it's #11 in my state though. I'm so torn! The reason we realized it was popular was we've been hearing it everywhere! Before we picked it I had never heard of anyone with that name.

I think it might be but it's going to be hell trying to find another name we both agree on!

Since I am close to the WA/OR border, I always check both states. And sometimes names that I like are in the Top 100 in WA, but I never hear the name being used, and then I look at OR and it doesn't crack the Top 100.

Thanks a lot Silas Timberlake!
I have always loved Silas, but as soon as Justin Timberlake used it, I was like "Nope. Cross that one off the list!" because I figured it would do nothing but rise after that.....

I was just about to post the same thing!!!
FFFC: I had no idea that JT used it. That is brand new news for me and now it's rise in popularity makes sense.

I picked a name for DD that I had not heard on any other kids. I was excited that her name wasn't popular and wasn't high on the SS lists. Then I moved to an area that had 3 girls in her class with the same name. So I used the name I loved despite its popularity for DS.
