We needed to get dd1's iron levels up, so we introduced steak fairly early on - 7 months or so, I think? We could just cut her a strip of it and she would suck the juices out. She loves it.
I think it's fine if you feed her mostly vegetarian meals with the occasional fish or meat dish when out at restaurants or at other people's houses. Just giving her what is normal for your family and lifestyle is probably best in the long run. You seem like a very healthy eater in general, so I'm sure she will do well no matter what you decide to do with meat!
We started solids a few days ago at 5 months. So far it's just applesauce. Tried rice cereal and oatmeal but Ds didnt like it. Dd loved it though. I stick with Gerber first foods and simple yogurts and purees. Id like to make my own food like with Dd but I dont know how realistic that is right now.

Just over here bumping this thread.
We're thinking of making our own in an effort to get us to eat more fresh veggies and fruits. So, bascially not for his benefit but for ours.
I was reading that you thin the purees out with formula or breastmilk. Does that sound right? I was thinking of starting with butternut squash or sweet potatoes. I personally love butternut squash. Only I add a crapload of butter and brown sugar to mine. Munchkin will not be so lucky.
Are there better veggies to try first?
I gave up on BLW. We never started it and I have already decided I don't think I can do it.
We ended up at pedis suggestion starting the rice cereal shortly after 4 mos. partially because I couldn't keep up with her hunger level. After reading the BLW book suggested earlier in this thread I had no intention of even doing cereal, and was very half hearted at first. But she was hungry, would not touch the formula, and the boobs just weren't working. Turns out she frigging loves the cereal and in the end despite the gross diapers I am glad we are doing it. She is not quite 5 mos but is super interested in my food. She grabbed my burger out of my hand and shoved a fistful in her mouth Saturday and last night got an asparagus stick in before I caught her. In both cases she just sucked on it a bit and didn't swallow so I am guessing no harm done but I will be guarding my food from now on very closely. I think though that this bodes well for starting the BLW when she does get to 6mos. like with all things baby I guess we will just do what works for us and try not to make her follow one particular plan.

kcrkcs You've given me some more thought on the BLW plan. When he's hungry he grabs for his bottles and tries to shove them into his mouth. He's not great at it yet, but he's working hard on it.
Then there are the times he attempts to throw his whole body towards the bottle. Not ideal.

Dd3 was grabbing Dhs coffee cup this weekend (not great) and trying to wrestle his corn cob away from him (very funny). We are waiting until our 6mo appt next week and if the pedi says ok we will go ahead with blw and start giving her soft fruits and veggies from our meals while we eat. Hard to believe we will have three kids eating at the table soon!

My baby grabbed a wine glass the other night. How does that bode?
I have no baby eating tools. Anybody have anything they love? We won't be starting solids for another month or so, but that won't keep me from buying things! Do I need baby spoons? (we are planning to do some purees). What about bowls or placemats? (we do have a high chair with a plastic tray) I was looking at one of those food masher things - will I use that? What about baby food freezer trays? Otherwise, I was just planning to use my steamer and maybe my blender or food processor.

I didn't have any baby eating tools either and just used a smaller spoon for the cereal. I think it's ok but I think I want a plastic one not loving the metal.

Just some plastic or silicon spoons and some bibs should be enough to start. I'd recommend waiting to buy much else. See how things go and what you end up wanting once you get some solids experience under your belt.

I'm going to have to get me some of those bibs!!
I don't want to wish DDs life away but I'm excited to start feeding her. We still have about 5-6 weeks though. She sits at the table with us during dinner now and plays with toys. She really hasn't shown interest in food yet though.
Following this. We're waiting until 6 months (just the boob for now) but beyond that not sure what we're going to do. Probably a combo of purées and BLW. Veggies first, maybe avocado, new food every 3 days. Not going to do baby cereal but will do real steel cut oats.

Pretty much this without the waiting three days between foods part.
I'll probably wait until after her six month appt as well. I'm worried that things are going to get really gross around here if she is still vomiting as much with solids as she is now. I need a game plan for dealing with that situation. Breastmilk puke is one thing, avocado, sweet potato, and oatmeal puke is another.
We started with oatmeal cereal at about 5 1/2 months. She loves it. She takes her little spoon and puts it in her mouth. She does really well. She definitely tells us when she is done! We do it once a day in the evening. I'm going to do veggie and fruit purees next. I will probably wait until she turns 6 months to start that (just one more week!). After she's done the purees a bit, I will start mixing in some finger foods.
We were hoping she'd sleep better with some solids. Maybe a slight improvement but not a lot.
When do we start doing it more than once a day? I'm not sure about that part.
tinydancer We just have baby spoons, high chair and bibs. I would like to get some little baby bowls too.
This is another question of mine.
I was planning on giving him stuff (whatever that ends up being) at dinnertime. When do I start adding in additional meals.
For that matter, when does he start eating "meals".
Why is feeding another human so confusing?!?!?!?!?.... or it's possible I'm overthinking it. A lot.
I have been doing dinner cereal pretty much every night and breakfast when I have time so not that consistently. I usually BF too before or after, but also use breakfast where she doesn't normally do a big BF anyway as an opportunity to try to catch up my freezer supply.

We have given DD avocado a few times... She seems to enjoy it. Have not started her on any other foods but sweet potatoes and apples are the next two on my list. I will also start with steel cut oats for grains but will likely not do the gerber cereals. I am waiting until the 6 month mark/go ahead from the doctor to introduce anything else. I have a cusinart baby food maker and am looking forward to making my own foods!
Those of you who give steel cut oats, do you cut them down at all before you cook them? Or just leave them as is?
They are already so small, I just leave as is. Just cook until they are very soft -- 20+ minutes or overnight. You can thin them with water, breastmilk, or formula.
