Lol!
I forgot how hard this newborn stuff can be after 4 years. I just want to tell the kid to use his words!

babyzebra daddy picked them out yesterday! He ran to BRU to grab nipple cream and anything preemie she might fit into because she drowns in everything else!
txmommy14, DS was also mixed up when he was a newborn. What helped us Most was starting white noise. It helped him relax and sleep during the night. We also kept it dark and quiet then and made it a point to get him in sunlight in the morning to "start" the day. It got much better about a week to ten days out.
I don't always do both sides. I offer, but sometimes she is completely uninterested. I just remember to start with the other side first next time. The LC said since my milk comes out pretty fast and forceful it might be she gets enough on one side to fill her tiny stomach.
Eta: as her appetite is growing she is taking both sides more and more now.

Yeah she's really only doing one side right now and falling right to sleep. I'm not engorged (yet) so as long as I'm not hurting my supply it doesn't bother me! Thanks ladies!

No real life experience but I think as pong as you have a way to keep track of/alternate which side she feeds from you'll be fine. She's still in that sleepy newborn phase. I would imagine she'll start getting more feeding stamina soon

Good evening night owls I have a very, very fussy baby tonight. Please share your strategies with me. We have fed, diapered, swaddled, walked around, put in rock'n'play (with rocking function on), white noise. What else?

Hi frecklesnbrains, have you tried the 5 s's together--swaddle, side position, shushing, swing/jiggle, and sucking? Look for youtube videos on 5 s's if interested. Dr. Harvey Karp. Heard about it, haven't used it.
When I've babysat fussy newborns, I've had success walking (especially up and down stairs) and softly singing "the ants go marching." It's very rhythmic, especially with the walking timed up to the song.
Also, possible it's gas? Has he burped? Can you palpate his large intestines and see if they're hard? If so, massage in a circle from ascending to descending. I swear this helps sometimes with gas or constipation.
Obvious disclaimer that I have no baby of my own yet so these have only worked in babysitting contexts.
Sorry frecklesnbrains! I was also going to suggest stairs or deep squats... MH has had good success with the deep squat plus the shhhh sound. Do you have an exercise ball you can bounce with him on? I haven't tried that but I have heard it works well.
ArgyleEnigma I'm going to try that massage for gas next time! Thanks!
Sorry frecklesnbrains. I was going to suggest the exercise ball too. Honestly I remember our second night or so home with our older DD. We had avoided pacifiers at recc of midwives and lactation folks but suddenly we were desperate and tried it and worked. Not for everyone though.
I have not slept a wink. It's been miserable. The only real complaint I have is that my crotch is so ridiculously itchy. Otherwise it seems to just be insomnia. But seriously it's 430. I know I didn't sleep before 1 and was up at 4 so 3 hours max in there. Ugh.
Up at almost 3 AM with horrible pelvic pressure/pain. No contractions though. I hope labor starts soon, I'd rather be up with a cute baby then random pain if I'm going to be sleep deprived either way. Not looking forward to a full day alone with my toddler tomorrow like this. Hope all you new mommas are having a peaceful night!

I hope you start to feel better. I'm two weeks post partum and took my first walk yesterday (only about 1 mile). After about 4 blocks, I felt a lot of pelvic pain similar to how I felt when I was pregnant. I thought it went away with the pregnancy, but I guess I need to give it more time. My joints in that area are definitely still sore.

I'm always surprised by symptoms I didn't have with my first so I'm trying to take it as a good sign that I'll go into labor, unlike with DS. I hope you start feeling better fast!

frecklesnbrains, Happiest baby on the block- we live by that book. And it works really well for us.
I used it professionally (early intervention) with families, and had my husband read it/watch the DVD to give him some guidance in soothing our baby once he arrived. He's a convert now.
Holding DD and trying not to fall asleep. 3am and she will not be put down. Anyone else up?
I've been struggling with falling asleep while holding DS all night. He will sleep perfectly in my arms but wake if put down. Every time I wake up with him I panic and say thank you to God that he's okay.
Meanwhile, all day he slept like a CHAMP everywhere and without any help.
I'm looking forward to our Pedi on Monday - if he's doing well weight wise, I'm going to ask about pacifiers overnight. I think they'd help us a lot.

It's 4:25 and I'm exhausted and I hate changing diapers when I'm tired. I'm always afraid that's when DD will end up peeing or pooping and make a huge mess that I don't have the energy to clean up.

4am here. DD refuses to sleep in the bassinet. I even tried giving a paci but whenever she's in there she wakes up less than an hour later inconsolable and won't latch. On my chest she sleeps 2-3 hrs and latches great when she wakes up. Sigh... not even a day old and already as opinionated as her big sister
We started a paci and finally got DD to take the MAM brand instead of just the soothies. It's been helpful! DS started a paci immediately and never had any sort of nipple confusion.
