Huge hugs manybellsdown! You're doing just fine! You didn't "give up", you just found a way to give your body a break while still making sure your baby got fed. That's all that matters. Bottles aren't evil. I hope the LC is helpful.
manybellsdown I echo everything that frecklesnbrains said. Bottles aren't bad. We did bottles the first two weeks when lo couldn't latch. It has turned out just fine. You are doing a great job!

+1 She said exactly what I was thinking!
+2 to everything everyone has said. Hugs manybellsdown
My morning- those little gel packs are really helping my pumping sessions.10-15 seconds in the microwave, then on to the boob + hand stimulation = significantly more milk.

+3 Sounds like LO got fed and you got to keep your mental health. I have to remind myself a lot that there is the "perfect" way to do things and then there is reality.

manybellsdown big hugs, baby is fed and that's what matters. Maybe LO can be checked for a lip/tongue tie. Sometimes that's the issue for such a painful latch.

I have a silly question...am I supposed to still have milk after Lo finishes nursing? He nurses and after he is done I still can squeeze out milk. My boobs don't hurt or anything, I'm just wondering if that is normal
As for your other question re: time LO feeds about 15-20 min per feed. With your 40 min sessions is there active feeding the whole time? I'm sure DD would be happy to use my boob as a pacifier as long as I let her but I unlatch when she's no longer regularly swallowing

I'm pretty sure phoe.nix is being a trickster and using me as a pacifier. Everytime I feel him stop o give him a nudge and on he goes again. He has been doing this since the hospital. The nurses saw the behavior and didn't seem too concerned.

He may be just sucking and not taking in milk, but he also may just be a really inefficient eater. My DS took about 45 min for each feeding and continued to do so for a while even after we switched to bottles. My DS was tongue and lip tied (not saying that yours is), so that contributed to the length of time he took. My pedi wasn't ever concerned.

Your body starts to build supply back out as you are emptying apparently- so from my understanding you at never truly quite empty.
Also, those first few days your boobs are not sure how much your LO needs so it tends to go on overdrive (what up engorgement).

manybellsdown my LO is on a bottle too. He wasn't gaining weight like the doctor wanted so we started pumping and supplementing. Don't feel bad. We're doing what our children need.
Ugh my nipple pain finally went away but now it's back!!! Sad panda
Mine were killing me yesterday, and I applied some polysporin (lc recommendation) and they are so much better today. I applied it very generously then put on breast pads...

So apparently Phoe.nix's face rash is contact dermatitis. I have to eliminate everything and anything scented. So I have switched to aveno fragrance free for my showers, can't use nipple balm or any creams to rule out what may be irritating him. I'm also doing more feedings using the football hold to keep his face away from the breast friend pillow in case the dermatitis is due to friction

LC visit today. She really helped, and the feed in her presence went great. I always worry I won't be able to replicate on my own but I just successfully completed our first feeding relatively pain-free!
My day and a half of pumping was probably the best break I could have given my nipples (not to mention my mental health, as you all mentioned). I'll probably be using a nipple shield for a little bit for more healing and decreased sensation. Baby seems cool with that, as milk is getting into his belly.
Thanks again for all of your kind words and help realigning my expectations/perspective. Damn hormones and expectations.
princessisadora, oh no, how annoying! My baby has a nasty rash on his face but I think it's baby acne. Of course it's probably a bunch of things - irritation from constant spit-up and breast milk smeared all over his face, heat, etc. Hope your little guy's gets better!

Has anyone used Milkie's milk savers? Yesterday at the LC she had me topless so she used a specimen cup to catch the let down from the non-occupied boob. I collected over an ounce and that just seems like a huge waste so I'd like a handsfree way to catch it.

Could you do coconut oil on your nipples? Some people swear by it!!
