Wow just wow. I watched last night and caught up on the thread this morning!
I loved how everything was tied up and ready for the next season.
But why/how was Varys with the sand snakes?? And then Dany?? I was actually kinda confused by the whole lady Olenna/ sand snake scene in general...
Help me understand
Varys left Mereen a couple episodes ago saying he was going to look for supporters for Dany. He must have headed to Dorne.
Elia Martell invited Lady Olenna to Dorne as well since they both hate the Lannisters. I'm assuming at Varys' suggestion.
Varys gets Lady Olenna and Elia Martell to side with Dany, then they all head to Mereen. If you watched the ending scene with the ships closely you could see ships with both the Martell colors (spear, red sun, yellow sail) and the Tyrell colors (flower on the green sail) alongside the Greujoys and Dany's new fleet.
In the episode where Marjorie tells Lady Oleanna to leave, she gives her a piece of paper with a rose on it. What was the significance of the Rose?
I believe just to show her grandmother that she was still herself acting with her family in mind. That she wasn't truly brainwashed by the Faith, and that she was pretending to be in order to do what she could for her family.
But Sansa had already turned him down. It seemed to me like a "I told you women can't get any power without a man" look.
I think he was holding on to hope that after she became Warden of the North (as he thought she would) that a marriage to the Tullys (AKA him) would set them up to get the rest of the North to unite beneath them. After all, Ned Stark married a Tully so it would be all symbolic and shit.
But, that's not how it all went down!
Does he really think he has any chance of sitting on the Iron Throne? I can't believe he really has aspirations that are that high.
I haven't finished reading the thread so this may have been addressed, but he is NOT a Tully. He was just a ward there when he was little.

But he does have the Eyrie and a large army. I think at this point Sansa is just a surrogate for Catelyn. And I don't think he ever loved Catelyn, she was just a symbol and a way to power as the daughter of those in power over him as a child.

I didn't know since he married Cat's sister if he was looped into that family somehow.

Am I the only one who didn't assume Varys sailed back to Meereen first and maybe they "picked up" the Dornish and High Garden ships on the way? They would be realy close to King's Landing if that were the case. I almost thought were were going to see the dragons flying over King's Landing at the end since it looked like the city was still burning in Bran's vision. I guess we'll find out next season how close they really are.

I do think Sansa if definitely a surrogate, I just wanted to point out he's not a Tully. She would have taken his name (Baelish) not the other way around.
