So far we haven't had any need for shoes, but with W pulling up at every opportunity and As sudden impatience with sitting it looks like we'll need some for outside in the near future. What shoes are you guys using? How do you know what size?

My sister In law is an obsessive shopper by the time my kid was born she bought her no joke 72 pairs of shoes from infant to size 5. She's worn 2 pair for pictures lol

For DD1 we took her to stride rite for her first pair. They do the measuring in the store and get you an exact size. We've also had her sized since then and don't buy them there. Target & Kohls also sell stride rite now so we've bought them there.
I've also found that different brands run different in sizing. DS1 can wear wear a 7/8 in Circo shoes at Target but needs at least a 9 in Nike. His current sandals are Circo from Target are a 7 but his run around Nikes from Kohls are a 9.
We don't wear shoes around the house so he did 90% of his early walking barefoot. He'd only wear shoes if he was walking on pavement or on public flooring. He'd go barefoot in the yard all the time. He's content barefoot, in board shorts outside. He's my little surfer/hippie 😊
melimo1315, no shoes, no socks, rarely pants in our house. Pair of hillbillies over here.
We would only be wearing them on pavement and public floors as well. I just know W will refuse to be held the minute she figures out walking, so I want to be prepared.
Not using shoes yet more. He just learned how to pull up to standing. It is good for the development of their foot muscles to learn to walk barefoot. I don't see him walking outside for a while yet.
With my daughter, I got her some sneakers around the time she started walking in the house. She took about another month to be confident enough to walk around outside.

This. We are lucky our Nov babes are learning to stand/walk while weather is warm and they don't need shoes.
When my DD started walking (also a Nov baby), I got her these bc they had the very small size she needed, but still a real shoe w a sole.

This kid has super tiny feet. I bought teeny little flip flops (for esthetic purposes only) and they are too big!! Her sister had giant feet, but she's so dainty. I don't see her having the confidence to be walking outside until winter and even then we won't be outside long for her to need anything but her Stonz boots with Robeez inside or something. I'll keep her footwear flexible as possible for as long as possible.

I bought size 3 surprize target brand stride rites since we're just starting to some walking type things. They're a little big. As soon as she actually starts walking I'll take her to stride rite to be sized.

I haven't even thought about this. We just started trying to pull up tho. I will likely do it when he starts taking steps. (How are we even talking about this?! We JUST HAD OUR BABIES!!)

General sizing for years 0-2 is 4 sizes a year (so size 1 is 0-3m, 2 is 3-6m...size 8 shoe is for the average 2yo). Unfortunately, most brands are really inaccurate in baby shoes, so it's a bit of a crap shoot unless you are buying a stride rite or similar high quality. Zulily often has lower priced stride rites (great for wide feet) and I've also found gently used ones on Thred UP or at Once Upon a Child.
DS has a couple of pairs of size 2 sandals that currently fit well. DD was wearing size 2 shoes at 1 year old, but I have size 5 feet, so makes sense that she would be smaller. She's size 8-9 now at 3.5yo.
For sandals, get one with an ankle strap. For infant sneakers, 2 velcro strap style give the best fit and for toddlers, the pre-laced with a velcro strap at the top are your best bet.

K won't be wearing shoes or socks until he's one since that's when he'll be moving out of the infant room at daycare and they require close toed shoes at that point. I have no idea what size his feet will be, compared to the rest of him, his feet are huge. for our daughter, we have to have her try them on to see if they'll fit because different brands all fit differently for her. she has the worlds smallest feet though. She's 3 and can still wear a size 4 in some brands....
Baby boy wears a 4. He has a huge foot! We have a pair of Cherokee brand sandals, but they are just for looks. He isn't pulling up or standing yet. Once he can walk we will do the soft soled stride rites since it will probably be fall by then.
