Both of our kids had it around 18'ish months old. Ds1 had a miserable case with 104 fevers blisters everywhere and out of daycare for 1.5 weeks. Our little guy hardly spiked a fever and had 3 spots. So IMO it depends on how severe it is.
I'll think good thoughts for your baby to stay clear.

We dealt with HFM hell two years ago. All four got it, but not at once. It was like as soon as one started getting better, another came down with a fever. I think it was over a month where we couldn't really leave the house because someone was symptomatic.
I found that the older they were, the worse it was. My sons were miserable, but the girls just seemed like they had a regular old virus. DS2 had many spots in his mouth and had a hard time eating because of it. We did lotsof popsicles.
And then a month later the kids' nails started peeling off, which I read was common.
Ugh. Sorry you're dealing with this. My advice is just to treat the symptoms as they come, keep popsicleson hand just in case, and spend a lot of time snuggling in front of the TV. Oh, and don't be THAT parent that brings your feverish kids around other kids (can you tell I'm still bitter about how my kids got it?).
And of you or your SO never had it as a kid, you can get it. My kids gave it to our sitter (she thought she had had it as a kid, but was wrong). It is awful for adults. As I mentionef, the older you are, the worse it is.

Mine both got it a couple of years ago. They were 4 and 1. They had a pretty mild case, apparently, bc short of a few blisters on their hands and diaper area, they didn't have much trouble. DS1 complained a bit of a sore throat but he was still eating and drinking well. DS2 basically just had a bad diaper rash. Had his brother not had obvious HFM, I don't think I would even have known what it was. It hit me hard, though. I was completely down for the count for 3 days.

I remember this. I think our kids had it around the same time.
One more thing - if he spikes a high fever, I highly suggest alternating Advil and Tylenol every 4 hours. It was the only thing that kept Z's fever down.
Our little guy barely required any meds at all as his was so mild.

I didn't think hfm was a once and done thing, creepyeyeball? A former coworker head out 3 times in the 16 months we worked together.
Then again, she wasn't a great employee, either, so maybe she was full of it.
I'm always paranoid every time my kids get rashes because I've heard how bad it is. The one time I thought DS1 had chicken pox, I took him in to rule out hfm as the daycare he rarely went to had just had an outbreak after he visited. They confirmed that it wasn't hfm, but couldn't tell me whether or not he had chicken pox!

Great advice! We seem to have a mild case so far. Fingers crossed. Fever spiking then dropping to normal all day long for 4 days now. Tiny rash on inside of 1 foot barely noticeable and sore throat off n on. I took him in thinking he had strep, came back neg tho.

The ped told us you def can get it more than once but only if it's a different strain of the virus. My friend said their one child has gotten it every year ugh!

This is the most depressing thing I've read all week. The thought of going through all that again. I thought it was a once and done thing.

Yep, there are definitely different strains and sub-strains. My BIL/SIL's DDs have had it twice already, and since they seem to be very susceptible to those kinds of infections (also get bad cases of chicken pox this spring), their pedi said they'll probably get the other strains at some point, too. Blah.
