Decided to take the plunge!! We tried cucumber, carrots, banana and avocado. Cucumber worked best but that might be bc it was the easiest to hold. I think she ate the most banana though bc it was just mashed into everything and all over her hands and the other food. Lol. She seemed to enjoy for about 20 min and then lost it. I think she was getting frustrated that she couldn't pick up all the stuff. I will have to experiment with how I cut stuff.

jewel441 , regarding tooth care. My mother was a pediatric hygienist for a billion years. We are big users of Nuk products because of this. She got me this www.amazon.com/NUK-grins-giggles-Training-Toothbrush/dp/B002UXQRKM K has no teeth so we give her the massaging brush to get used to holding it and having it in her mouth. She pretty much just gnaws on it. When she does start getting teeth, we'll switch to the cleaning brush. I plan on giving it to her first for a few minutes to gnaw on and move around in her mouth and then I'll follow up with actual light brushing. My mom also recommends taking a damp wash cloth and running it around their mouth, gums, and tongue after feeding. This helps them get used to having someone's fingers in their mouth and it also helps wipe out bacteria and food buildup.
ETA: No toothpaste is needed yet. You want to focus on just brushing the crud off and establishing a good oral routine where they are comfortable with people and objects in their mouth.
On a different note, how has she been doing with solids?
SheilaTheTank the first day she loved it. She ate a bit of banana and chews on cucumbers like its her job. The second day she pretty much just chewed on the cucumber. We are taking a break for a few days until her teeth are bothering her a little less... Her tummy was a bit off overnight but we also had to give her Tylenol so it was more likely from that, but too many new things at once...
Anyone's LO having trouble getting the hang of eating solids? We're just doing baby oatmeal right now and she is just not getting it. It's only been a week and she won't open her mouth for the spoon; she'll stick out the tip of her tongue and lick the spoon. If I do get a bite in when her mouth is open, she'll gag or spit it out. As I recall, it took DS2 several weeks to get the hang of solids, so I'm not really worried. Just curious!

Yup and if I do get it in his mouth, most of it comes back out due to tongue thrust. Definitely not ready here. DD did the same, she wasn't ready until about 7ish months.

I think I may end up not waiting till 6 months for solids for E. Been letting her chew on a few things here and there. Today she kept stealing my apple and freaking the F out when I took it back. Last week I let her suck on a piece of steak and she cried when I took it away.

I left C alone downstairs for a moment to put my older daughter down for nap and when I came back I found her chowing down on a bagel (that big sis had left on the floor). Okay, so maybe she's interested now. Lol!
So LO actually ate some banana today and I don't think she cared for it. So I think we will take that off the roster for a few days. Cucumber is her definite favorite. We tried watermelon today too, although she didn't get much before she melted down after actually eating some banana.
We also tried a sippy cup with water and she loved the cup. And actually drank from it!!! I ended up taking it away bc I was worried she was drinking too much water considering she doesn't actually really eat. We are gonna try it with milk too. FX it works!!! My goal/hope is that she can drink from it by this wedding we have in October, otherwise we might have some complicated logistics for nursing.

PSA: avoid beans.
I thought the stage 3 foods were because they were a little more textured, so I got one with red bean and one with black beans in it. She wasn't a huge fan, but she ate them over the course of a few days. This weekend we had SO MANY blowouts. She made up for all the times she hasn't pooped on the weekend and then some. I'm going to stick with fruits and veggies from now on; maybe even until potty training.
So LO seems to like chewing on cucumbers and watermelon. She made a grossed out face at avocado, but it didn't make her stop playing with stuff. However the last two times I have tried banana she has had an absolute meltdown after putting it in her mouth... Are you supposed to keep trying? Take a break and come back to it?

The stuff I've read says it can take 6 or more times for them to like a food. There's textures involved that they need to get past too. Have you tried mashed banana or banana puree? Maybe it's a texture thing.
K also hates avocado so I got a fruit and avocado puree to see if she'll like that better.

No we haven't done any purees or mashes. Mostly really soft bananas though. We have had much better luck with peaches and avocado. She is actually eating a little of both of those now. And watching her mash it on her gums and figure out chewing is so cute!
What are people doing about high allergen foods? We got what seems like really outdated advice from the pediatrician. It is very different from what I have read/what the last doc said... We are low risk/no fam history... Jw what other people are doing?

The only thing I did not give dd1 before she was a year was honey. My understanding is the sooner the better in introducing allergens. Particularly if no history.

Our pedi has told me that waiting to introduce high allergen food is outdated and I can give everything except honey. She said kids have a better chance of not developing the allergy the earlier they are introduced to the food.

Ya this doc was super super conservative on solids... She said to wait on meat... White meat next month and red meat at 9 months... But we already gave LO meat and she did great with it so I don't see a reason to stop.
She also said no chocolate... Which I thought was really funny... I was like is that something ppl give babies? It really never occurred to me to give her chocolate.

This. Early and often for things like strawberries, eggs, PB, etc. Honey was really the only no-go before a year.

What are people's opinions on this?
Bud is cool with the flavors and textures of solids but just doesn't get that it's edible or the mechanics of swallowing. Is that normal? Does that mean that he's not really ready yet? Is there something I should be doing to encourage or promote swallowing?

We are doing BLW, but it definitely took a some time to get the mechanics down. We started like maybe 2ish weeks ago and 3 days ago is the first time I was 100% sure she swilled something, yesterday is the first time she ate any significant amount (as witnessed by her poop this AM). I think it's normal to take time to figure out, even if they are "ready"

I agree with this! We started solids a week ago and she hasn't swallowed anything significant. Diaper still look like EBF poop. Most of the food ends up in her lap still, but she loves to practice.
halfahippy or anyone else doing BLW do you think LO could gum something pancake textured? Like one of those 3 ingredient "pancakes" that are like ground oats, banana and egg?
She was able to eat ground beef, and actually eat some. I want to try more textures, etc. but I am still a little nervous about choking .

I've given A French toast and she did great with it. She didn't actually get any down, but she never choked or gagged on it.

Pancakes was one of the first real foods I gave dd1. She was probably closer to 8 months though. I did give E tiny pieces of pancakes a couple weeks ago. I think if they are very fluffy you are good.
ETA have you read up on the difference between gagging and choking? I think it's very important to understand the difference so you don't freak out over gagging.
